Just my opinion.
No cams, no extrud hone, no larger throttle body!!! No need, a stock blick 3.2 with a full race exhaust, and chip on race fuel can make up to 270chp without toutching them. Most the power is in the exhaust and chip (tunning). Cat bypass and sport muffler with a matched SW chip is the cheap HP. Verify your AFR's on a dyno. Expect that not all 3.2's are the same after sitting around for 25 years. No power advantage to running SSI's over a bypass. However, an exhaust with 1 5/8's or larger primary tubes can make another +10hp. Then a race muffler. If you can get better fuel, more aggressive ignition spec's can be used. No need for a cam! The 964 cam runs at about a half point lower effective compression ratio. Thus, I would only do it if you are going to raise the compression at the same time as it will cost you driveablity. To make more from a 3.2 you need to go bigger displacement or you would have to run cams where you make power to a higher rpm range. This can work against your gear ratios. As a point of reference, the 73 911S made more HP up top and thus had a higher top speed. However, the 911E with the same weight and gears was faster basically everywhere else. If you really want to wake up your car, go with close ratio gears. The first to second shift puts us in a really soft part of the power range, right where we spend most of our time on the street. This alone will feel like about a 50hp bump. Because it is right when you shift into second. I also like the weight reduction thing. I left my spare, jack and tools at home for a 50 lb savings. The exhaust can save some. Our battery is a place to consider and a sealed battery is a good idea anyway. Power seats are over 100lbs. Rear seat backs a little. 100lbs saved is about equal to 8 more hp. Our door panels are actually light and there is not much to be saved with the carpet. There is some heavy sound pads under the back part of the drivers compartment. |
911st, I am moving in exactly that direction with less weight 150-200lbs and probably just the exhaust, chip and extrude hone later. Simple changes should improve power to weight from 13:1 to 10:1.
"If you really want to wake up your car, go with close ratio gears." Was close ratio gearing an option in the Carrera? |
No optional gears on the 3.2. There was however for some of the earlier 911's.
The factory took the same approach where there special Carrera Club Sport. Less weight, LSD, chip, no cat (on the euro's). |
I'd like to see how you pare the weight and up the hp to get 10:1. My racecar will be 11:1 when I get the carbs final tuned and the weight fine-tuned. 10:1 is a well stripped 3.2 Carrera car compared to my fairly light 2550/225 SC widebody at min race weight (me in it fully equipped). I guess I need to consider my safety cage wt is a big addition vs a street car w/out a cage

The Spec911 cars are at 2350lbs w driver at the end of the race and making about 220whp / 250chp. Dose that count?
Some of the Carrera's do have a hard time making weight. Most have 915's, stock brake rotors, fiber bumpers, no door windows/frames, lexan... The 3.2 motors have to run a 1.5"header. Most run Phase 9 race mufflers with a SW race chip. Otherwise stock long blocks. |
Keith,
Not saying it can't be done. Just curious what the projected weight and hp is to acheive 10:1. I've got a friend who'll field his car fairly well lightened (bumpers, A/C, emissions) and will actually have to work a little to make sure he stays above 14.5:1 (GTS2). I know I could easily get to 10:1 in my racecar, as it still has a bunch of weight I could pare (battery, hood, ballast, doors, sunroof guts), but i'd still get my butt handed to me at 10:1 in GTS4. So i'll continue to stay near GTS3 max of 11:1. Only reason I mentioned my curiosity is because I think 10:1 is a really well stripped 3.2 chassis if it were to be mostly street use. |
Maybe I missed in it a quick glance of the thread - but thottle linkage...adjust it and make sure you are getting full throttle.
Chip and exhaust and lose weight...that is about all the bang you are going to get before big $$. |
I do think that cams make a difference and that they should be included when performance tuning a 3.2 engine. The stock cams in a 3.2 were designed around smog almost 30 years ago. While you want to make sure you don't bleed off too much compression, making things breathe better also involves optimally opening and closing the valves.
New cams DIY can be as little as $500. George |
Anyone know the size of the throttle body on a 3.2?
And the approximate thickness of the TB shaft? Thx! ;) |

I have swapped out the whole transmission and rear end on some BMW and Mercedes and it was life altering improvement and joy. |
10:1 was not counting the driver and was not RWHP. I think my car will be about 2550 without AC and I have already removed the sound deadening and the factory seats and have a 17lb battery and light exhaust. It may be closer to 11:1 but that is significant considering the original car was 14:1 weight to HP ratio. Why not a 2500 911 ...that is what it should be...right? A lighter car should also get much better mileage and handle much better.
