Missing engine serial number
 

I need to pick the collective Pelican brain. I have been looking for the engine serial number on my 72 T's engine but have come up empty. I've been told that it is supposed to be stamped into the vertical fan support on the right hand aft of the engine. My owner's manual confirms that it should be there. My engine does not have any evidence that there ever was a number there. I cleaned off some slight corrosion with a brass brush and some thinners only to find a smooth surface underneath. Even shining a flashlight at different angles doesn't reveal a stamping or even traces of its removal.

The only stamping I've found in that area is 911/57.

Anyone have any ideas? Is there a second stamping elsewhere on the engine that I could look for? Help! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/pray.gif

If it were to be a 914/6 case the numbers would be stamped by the breather and thermostat.
In the years there was some porus cases in the area of the oil pump and were replaced with unstamped cases by the dealer.

No stampings around the breather so I guess that rules the 914/6 idea out. Tried to check the date code but it's buried too deep behind the engine mount brackets to see even with a small mirror.

Factory replacement cases came without numbers. I would suspect your engine was either replaced or the case was replaced at some point due to engine failure.

My book shows:
911/57 as a 1973 911TV-E (not sure what TV-E means, maybe Sportmatic?)
2341 cc, 130 hp @ 5600 rpm & 196 tq @ 4000 rpm,

Carbs, bore/stroke = 84/70.4, 7.5:1 cr, valves int/ex = 46/40, ports int/ex = 32/32, engine# 653001

Thanks. The book "Original 911" by Peter Morgan shows that the 911/57 engine type was used in the 1972 and 1973 911 T coupe and targa models (non-Sporto) only. That tells me that the engine is at least correct for the car, if not the factory-installed one.

You have a factory replaced case, I had one on my 73E and also on a 66 912.

Bingo! Replacement cases have no engine number because they are a replacement part, not a complete engine. Not a big deal unless you are into the "matching numbers" thing. It just means that your engine is not original, tho it may well be rebuilt to original specs...
