Annoying tick tick tick ...

I just purchased an '83 SC Cabriolet that I fell in love with. WIth the top up and windows up (only) I hear a tick tick that soumds like it is coming from the front wheel or under the dash. It speeds up as the car speeds up so one woudl suspect the front wheel. One weird thing is it goes away if I turn the power off? If I coast the car with the ignition off it goes away, but when I turn the key so to the on position (not started) the sound reappears? Any ideas would be appreciated!

Speedometer? Since the speedo is electronic it is not going when the keys are off, the noise is gone. When the car is on and going the speedometer would change relative to the speed of the car. Not positive, but first thing that came to mind to me.

My guess is also speedo but possibly odometer - is your trip meter actually counting or is it at that 'part way' point where it just seems to click past?

Not sure whether this part is electronic though.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot the speedo? I just upgraded from a '67 911, and had a good idea how to fool with that one. I am surprised the speedo is electronic! Thanks a lot - keep the ideas coming ...

The odometer thing can be easily checked - is it actually adding miles on or is it visibly 'clicking' past.

pop out the speedo and pull the plug off the EGR counter box. it's below the speedo hole about 10".

SC's with O2 sensors have the same device too.
I pulled the plug on this little nuisance the first week I had my car.
No more tick, tick, tick'n.

O2 sensor service light counter ... remove the brown ground wre, and no more ticking! Went through this with Super Jim several months ago ...

You just need to use the right "search words".

I have the same click.
Cary and I tried to track it down, but I have a feeling...this is my culprit.

I had a similar noise. Turned out to be the overflow pipe from the tank in the front left wheel arch was rubbing on the tyre.

Yep. Disconnect the brown wire that goes from the counter to (I believe) the tach area, and tape it so that it will not touch something live and start a fire. Problem solved.
