Distributor Removal
Hey guys,
It's me again, sorry to be asking so many questions. As part of me engine compartment facelift, I now have the alternator/fan and housing out, and am going to powder coat the fan and housing. I would like to remove the fan/alt strap for powder coat well. The only way I can think of to get the strap out is to remove the distributor, as it's tight against it now. See photo below. Is there something I am missing, or do I need to pull the distributor? If so, what's the best way to do this, and do I run a risk of screwing up my timing? ![]() Thanks! ~Max |

It is possible to get the fan strap out without removing the distributor. It won't be easy, and not possible without bending it completely out of shape.
I changed mine for this one: Rennline Stainless Steel Alternator Strap - Porsche-Rennline, Inc. It's a lot easier now. Take care, O-

Wow, did you paint yours, or does the stainless stay pretty bright?

Maybe I am missing something here, but removing the distributor is a simple task. Take the cap off (leave the plugs attached,) put the engine at TDC, loosen the bolt(s) on either side of the distributor and it will slide right out. Put it back in the same way you took it out, making sure engine has remained at TDC. That's how I've done it on my 86.

+1 w/ redranger, put the engine at TDC (rotor will point towards small notch on dizzy lip, indicating cyl #1).
And for added security, make a small mark (with a marker or screwdriver) on the distributor shaft where it enters the engine case, and the case itself. You can line these marks up when you reinstall the dizzy. Just make sure you don't accidentally turn the motor over while the dizzy is out!!!!
