M&K tailpipe options????

Simply wishing more aggressive look to match the sound. Have anyone replaced their 2.5 inch M&K tailpipe with a larger one? Also need to know if it changed the tone as I like it as is.

My M&K has twin 2.5 outlets (RSR style).....yes it changes the the tone....and the volume....even if you have twin outlet semi stock style....it will change the tone and the volume.

I ordered mine with a single 3"pipe that my mechanic welded on. Gives a lower tone. The gen 5 muffler is very quite so the combination is a very civil lower tone. Nice if you are not looking to sound like a race car on the street.

Former posted photo that stated "Now your a Ricer" was removed as it could be considered offensive. I fully understand that a 3" outlet is not "rice" and felt that it was so obvious that the picture would be humorous.

FWIW the OP was not offended. Thanks Will.

I reserve the right to in the future post the picture to actual "ricer" modifications.

Aloha, Shane

There is NOTHING ricer sounding about an M&K muffler....but to each his own.

Agreed, the photo is my attempt at humor because he wanted a bigger tip, trust me I am well aware of the sound of an M&K.

He's a "joker" .....with only 2 posts.
Discount anything he might say as non consequential.

3" is hardly coffee can size.
In fact, 2.75"-3" is nice for many Porsches.

I have an m&k with only 2 inch outlets and it's still too loud. In all honesty, if I knew it would be this loud and have a weird drone that will set off alarms, I would have never bought one. But I got caught up with the looks.

.
Although his attempt at humor may be poor, he has more than 2 posts...
More like 1764... and 2 blog entries (at time of this post)
And he has a M&K muffler...

3" is quite ok, not too much at all

I'm happy with my gen 5 (2/1) with it's pleasant drone, alarm setting, race car sounding qualities. Jokes fine all !

General rules of thumb for 911 mufflers:

Smaller hole = higher frequency.
Bigger hole = lower frequency.
Two-out (with either one-in or two-in, doesn't matter) = drone, especially in the 2500-3000 range.
Therefore, two big tailpipes = low frequency drone of the alarm-tripping variety.

Sounds good to me! Thanks! My pursuit of a 3" continues.... possibly double tips in the future!

Let me emphasize that the drone isn't a great thing - it can be really annoying, and it's right at a typical cruising speed, around town or on the highway. However it does motivate you to keep the revs up :>

Wavey, I was really worried about the whole "drone" problem when I got lucky and acquired a NOS Dansk SS 2 in 2 out muffler for my '86 with SSI's. I had to cut off the tips and angle them downward to clear the bumper and for whatever reason, no drone! Not sure if it is because I moved the tips or the fact that it is a Dansk muffler from the mid '90's or that it is an early muffler on a late car.

Wavey, I fully agree... it disappear around 3K rpm.

Kurt, yes angling it a bit downwards seems to be better.

I wonder if it's because the Dansk is more of a "real" muffler, as compared to an MK, B&B, etc? Could be the downward tips too, for sure. I had a Dansk Sport, single-out w/the big tip, and it wasn't much louder than my stock muffler, just deeper. My current MK has 2.5" dual center-outs; I made a block-off for one outlet and it really sounds great. But with both outlets open the droning is pretty annoying, although it's bone-chillingly wonderful from 5K to redline. My comments above are based on personal experience, observations from other Pelicans and conversations with Ben at MK. Ben says almost all dual-outs drone to some degree.
