how much blue RTV does it take to seal up your case
allot
and i mean allot:confused:. a guy that my girl friend knows has been asking me about porsches and has been looking for one. while i was away he called about a 77 911s and what i knew about it. after a quick talk he told me it belonged to the local porsche tech from the dealer and the dealership was selling it on consignment. it was a few years ago that the tech had owned the car so i asked him to wait till got into town. when i returned to town he was driving his new pride and joy. i took the car for a drive and it ran good but shifted poorly, i asked him if he had a PPI done he said why should he the porsche dealer sold it to him. we took it into the garage for a quick look over and found that the bottom of the case was oozing oil and blue RTV.after a bit more inspection i found the whole motor had been sealed with this stuff. i told him to take it back and ask how this made it past inspection and he was told it was as is. but they did fix his sunroof apparently this wasn't as is?. so as you might have guessed im resealing the motor the bearings and crank look good after a mic i have decided to clean crank and install new bearings seals. i am now 18 hours into cleaning and still not even close to being done. long story short getting a second opinion would have saved a lot of work money for him. well i normally don't post anything like this but i came in from garage upset about how hard it is to clean off the RTV. so after the motor ill tear down the tranny and fix that as well. sorry for the vent but had to get that out. cheers ed |
Removing the stock thermo reactors and replacing with an updated SC system. also had a little help in the tear down.

That blue stuff looks like some sort of jointing compound ... Hylomar or another brand,it's not supposed to harden but rather stay flexible, obviously whoever used it put way too much although he should not have used it in the first place !
What a mess ... Phil |
a 2.7 with new main bearings will most likely bind the crank when the main through bolts are torqued up. read up on what needs to be done to a 2.7 case if it's to be reused. maybe you already know. those engines are nice when properly rebuilt, but a can-o-worms otherwise.

Why does that happen? |

I soak parts in Bar-sol that have any kind of silicone sealant on them. It will turn it into a goo that will wipe off. Leave it in the parts cleaner over night. You know if you have the right stuff by putting on a latex glove and getting some of the Bar-sol on it. The glove will grow and eventually disappear.
