Porsche Crest Lowering my 911SC

Hello all..... After buying parts from Pelican over the last few years, I finally decided to join the forum and take advantage of the wealth of knowledge here.

Here is my problem.....
I have an 81 - 911SC that I track at the Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, Ill. I recently gutted the interior and managed to get about 165lbs out of it, (It now weighs in at 2,301 lbs) however this caused the car to gain almost 2 inches of ride height. This of course produces an undesirable roll when cornering and in fact tends to let the rear tires actually lift off the pavement. I have a good rear after market anti-roll bar that worked fine before. I know I need a heavier front anti-sway bar (which is why I got on here today) however, I also need to get it back down 2 or 3 inches. The "Haynes" manual I have is pretty much useless and I'm hoping somebody on here can help me out with this?

Thanks...
Bad Brad

Welcome to the forum.

you'll need to re-index your torsions bars to get 2 inches of lowering in the rear.

Buy a Bentley manual or, at the very least, 101 Projects for your 911.

Both obviously have instructions on this as well as other maintenance/upgrade/repair features.

read these threads and you will get a basic understanding of what needs to be done.Pelican Parts Technical BBS - Search Results

I cant imagine removing 165 lbs raised the car 2 inches...hell, when I sit my 205lbs in my '84, the ride hardly changes at all. Could there be a bigger issue for you if your TBs are that soft?

Thanks Oh haha...
I know I need to get the torsion bars re-indexed.... Just wasn't sure how to go about it. I will check on the manuals you suggested. Thanks again

kodioneill - No it's a 63 split window coupe. The 67s came with several engine options but I don't think the 327 was one of them?

Thumbs up

I believe you can lower the front end by turning the screws right below the bump steer pegs. You have to re-adjust spring plates for the rear.

What interior parts did you remove to shave 165lbs? I have an SC that I'm trying to trim down also.

Those are nice cars that you have BTW

Make sure you have car corner balanced once you lower it.

Absolutley true and further, a proper alignment.

I'd also point out a potential problem with your aero package. You have what looks like an effective front splitter and these things create downforce, something that your rear tail does not: only some lift cancellation. I'd strongly recommend something like the 3.8RS wing on the back to balance the car at speed. High-speed oversteer is the result if you don't.

Wilspeed - Thanks for the info. I was able to lower the front as you said, however that only goes so far. However my big problem was lowering the back. The Porsche guy at the track wants a significant amount of $$ to do it so I thought I could handle it myself but noe that I have learned a little about it, I understand why he wanted so much. It is a huge pain.

As far as my interior goes... I took out everything except the dash & two Recaro seats. The heaviest thing was probably the sound proofing behind the back seat. That alone weigned about 40lbs. Both bumpers were very heavy also and that was actually most of the weight I lost.

Thanks for the commnet about my cars. I haven't beeen able to post a pick of my GTO for some reason??? It won't take.

Gulf / Speed... I will have it balanced once I get it lowered. I have a spec Miata that is balanced and it does make a world of difference on the track.

As far as my aero package is concerned.... I'm good with it. The max speed I get on the longest straight is about 115mph and a majority of the turns are under 60 so the rear wing is not an issue at this point

BadBrad:

Just to add a data point for comparison, my lowered and corner balanced 1987 Carrera is 3.5" (lowest point of car) from the bottom of the (stock) rear anti- roll bar drop link to the ground with 225/45 15"7&8 wide wheels on all four corners. Top of arch front fender and rear fender measurement thru the center of the wheels all same at 24 1/4"Wheel/tire diameter is 23" on all four wheels.

That SC euro engine is a nice advantage over US verson. Color's good too.
