If BMW Can Do It, Why Can't ....

Porsche?!

Check this out, if you haven't already read about it:

BMW M3 CSL Lightweight

OK, it's a concept. But a VERY doable concept.

I envision a Porsche Boxster RS Lightweight. Take a standard S, trim off 500 pounds, add 30-50 ponies, and ... voila! Of course, under current Porsche management the car would retail for $125,000 and have a 2 year waiting list. Ahhh, forget it. I'll stick with my 71 ......

Nice car, big bucks. What bugs me is where is the M3 V8? They've been racing the car under the provision it would soon be a production model. I've seen no press releases about production timing, where's the car? Porsche races what they sell.
Apparently, BMW races what they might sell if they have to...

Supposedly the BMW V8 "GTR" will be released next Spring...price may be over $200K. (I think I read 250,000DM). It most likely will not be available in the US, but you never know.

I heard yesterday that the new car market has softened enough that you can now get the regular production M3 for "merely" sticker price now (in L.A.). The GTR, and CSL, if built and sent to the States, will be outrageously spendy.

Of course Porsche has stretched and bent the rules on plenty of occasions before. While I would love to see Porsche back on top they have dominated for quite a while. It should be a compliment that BMW had to take such drastic measures to be competitive. And as much as I hate it having someone else win for a change should help the racing scene which isn't the best from what I understand.

Hello

BMW just tries to follow a 996 GT3 on the Nürburgring and then they need a lightwight car.
As far I see the politics: BMW needs the CSL as the current V8 solution only works in america and if Porsche strikes back they are not able to fighr back so they just make the lightwight to have a chance again.
Btw if I read it right the CSL is nearly similar in wight as the 996 GT3 but costs a "bit" more.

Also in the 70´s BMW made a 3.0 CSL to fight the Carrera RS and on the long run from that battle was the 935 Moby Dick ( Hey guys read some old books and find out who always won on the end )

If you like to buy a good BMW you only can buy Alpina´s.

Grüsse
