73T S gauges oil pressure sender query?
My sending unit is mounted near the fly wheel end, on the top of the engine. It has one wire. The wire has continuity to ground, with the engine off. the dash gauge needle moves a bit when the car is started.I cleaned the sender in and out .Does anyone know how to determine which item is at fault, the sender or the dial. Thanks

Test the gauge like this: Remove the sender wire and turn on the ignition. The gauge should peg - go to the highest pressure position. Then ground the sender connection. The gauge should be at the 0 pressure position. It might move up a little from the "ignition off" position.
If it does this, it is probably good. Your T did not come with an oil pressure (or temperature) gauge. The pressure sender should mount to the rear of the engine on a banjo fitting by the alternator, close to where the oil temperature sender goes. The sender on the front of the engine (by the breather) should be the idiot light switch. Of course, it doesn't much matter where these go as long as they are connected properly to the gauges and warning lights. The pressure sender is a fat pot-like fellow. Nothing you can do to clean it (other than where the wire attaches) or fix it. You can measure its resistance with an ohmmeter, though. Should be zero or close to it with the engine off. Rise some at idle, and a couple of hundred ohms or so at high RPMs. |
