Pass emissions with SSIs SC and 3.2 carrera
You could take off the entire exhaust and replace with an OE configuration exhaust, which would be lots of time, lots of money and potentially some broken studs.
Or, you could whip up a device like the one I found on eBay. This guy used to have 911s near Chicago and they had to go thru emissions. So, he fabbed up a muffler/cat/o2 unit that all bolts in place of the muffler. Put this on in place of the M&K 2in2out exhuast, adjusted mixture and the car sailed thru. Car is an 82SC. Don't even get me started on Denver and emissions and how they just changed the Vintage car plates to a hard cut off at 1975. And if you are in Denver, you can use this exact unit. I left it at Storz garage for any other uses in the Mile Hi city who want to run SSis on a street car.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1266441594.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1266441608.jpg |
Very cool. Good idea and generous offer.

I'd love to know your "pass" numbers, so that I can see if your area is as strict as CA! Did your car have to be put on a dyno, or is the test static? Did the smog station enter your info for the later engine, or was the car tested as an '82?
I'm really curious about this because I'd love to put SSIs on my '82 SC, but in CA... |
I like the idea, but something don't jive.
In Illinois we don't have to have our 911's emission tested, too old. Here it is straight from the "Illinois Air Team" Air Team - Illinois Vehicle Emission Test Program "Q. What vehicles are subject to vehicle emissions inspection? A. Generally, most 1996 and newer gasoline-powered passenger vehicles, light and heavy duty trucks and busses are subject to testing after they are four years old." |
I wonder how the car drives with that setup. Does it rob all the HPs from the SSIs?
|
I'm not sure I understand why changing exhausts for the test is a big deal. Granted, the first time you remove the original exhaust you may have problems with the exhaust studs, but from that point forward you'll be swapping the exhausts every 1 or 2 years, and using anti-seize, so there shouldn't be any more issues swapping back and forth should there?
|
There may be a market for such device: a muffler-cat combination for SSIs that enables to pass emissions and retains good performance...so it could be left in place.
|
This is brilliant nkgosselin! It's just to pass the test, so who cares what the HP is...? I was also pretty disappointed when buying my 78 SC in October to find out that Colorado changed their emissions rules and my car has to be tested EVERY YEAR instead of the customary every other year for newer cars!
I have been trying to figure out how to do my SSi headers and not have to swap out full exhaust every year, and this is perfect! Hey nkgosselin, if you're ever up near Boulder, give me a shout, and maybe we can have a mini Porsche and suds meet! Cheers, - Craig |
That won't work in Califonia-it won't pass the visual.
|
It is certainly restrictive. Just good enough for emissions. My butt dyno says it did lose a bit of go, especially at higher RPMs. But it was only on for a couple of hours to pass the test.
Talewinds, why the conspiracy? The seller was from outside Chicago. Nothing not jivving here. He made this up for his car and another for a friend. I don't know how long ago it was, but he said he used it for a few years before he moved to a more modern P-car. Why would he do this if he didn't have to? Aurel, when I spoke to the seller he said he thought of making these and selling them but just imagined the market was too small. I agree. There are not too many of us who need to emissions test these things. Pete, my numbers were HC 2.7 with a limit of 3.5, CO 10.8 with a limit of 45, and NOx 1.1 with a limit of 5.0. My car had to be dynoed. It is the IM 240 test I think. The car has a 3.0, so not a later motor. I just put the 3.2 in the subject line because I think this could benefit those owners as well. Craig_D, send me aPM and we can meet up whenever the snow is not out. Maybe one of the cars and coffees. And if you want to borrow the unit, just call the boys at Storz. They can give it to you or they could install and uninstall it for you as well. |
I believe it would pass visual in CA. We have visual in Colorado as well. It has a cat, 02 sensor and muffler all in the proper order.
|
But Ca looks for stock components, they literally match the engine to pictures. Aftermarket does not fly.

From the smog techs Ive dealt with, Im willing to bet they would pass you on the visual. |
Ed, you need to find a new testing station.
I pass with a unit similar to this, a pump in place for show and nothing else. With the exception of the spider web it passes visually and the numbers are good. Don't deny yourself the power! |

California Smog
I don't run SSIs but I do live in California. I have an 80SC. I run stock headers, a J-Pipe (with OX sensor) bypass, no smog pump, and a Dansk stainless steel muffler. Every two years I bolt up the Cat in place of the J-Pipe and take the car to a local Porsche Independent mechanic. He tunes it for smog and delivers the car to the smog station. It passes with HUGE margins. (BTW - I have little to no compression in cyl #2 but no visible oil smoke). When he gets the car back to the shop he re-tunes it for street and I pay him about $75 total and go home and put the J-Pipe bypass back on. I don't ask why it passes visual with no smog pump and I don't wonder why the scores are so low, but the motor has 185,000 miles on it and it sure is tired. Then I run the snot out of it for two more years and repeat. It's worked for two tests in the last five years. I'm guessing he has a "friendly" smog test station near by.
|
Well, since I run B&B headers, I'm out. Secondly, having a pump in place could be a problem too, as they weren't part of an '84 3.2. I'm not saying I had any problem passing emissions. My observation was a general one.

Is this the case in So. Cal. I asked about this the last time and he said that was not the case. The look for each of the items listed for said car. They did somthing new. They put a test device on the gas tank filler. |
If it has a cat and o2 sensor it will pass visual in Cali unless they are so poorly fitted that they clearly won't work. Very few if any smog stations will know or care if the configuration is not the same as factory. They have a list of items they check for and if they are present they move on.
They check the filler and cap to see if the car is leaking raw gas vapor from the tank. |
