Post how would I thread my shift knob

found these really cool shift knobs, but I need to cut threads on the shaft...
I nave tapped holes but never cut threads...how do you do this...any suggestions.

the knob maker is also asking for measurements to tapp the hole in the knob...anyone ever done this and know what size it is???

by the way it is a voodooracing knob...really cool...simple and elegant...

thanks

911s push on with an internal fluted lock ring. no threads. have him bore the hole the same size as your original knob, and use the stock lock ring.

I got a 914 shift knob. Looks plenty cool, only 25 bucks, and it has 3 tiny allen bolts that hold it on. I've had in on there since just after I got the car a few years back, and it's great. I'm not one to spend too much on a shift knob.
(they go up in price quickly: check performance prods catalog for WTF would anyone pay that price?)

I vote for John Walker's idea. That way, if you want to return to stock in the future it could be easily done. Always nice to have fun choices...

Hey John...I went to the dealership to buy a plastic crush ring, but they came back with a flimsy looking metal thing...no threads just vertical ridges...is that what you are talking about?

I thought they were plastic...I think PelParts and Tweeks carry the plastic crush sleeve...which would work better?

And what is the diameter of the hole...my PO put on a after market leather knob...so I do not think she used the stock crush ring...so I have no knob to measure with...and so I put the metal thing around the lever and just smash the new knob over it?
for the plastic crush sleeve is it threaded or same concept as the metal one???

thanks guys...and the knobs are 30-40 dollars...a perfect sphere of brushed aluminum...alot of the contoured knobs are not good because when I shift my hand is on top where the contoured ones are made for you to grip it horizontally...plus it is a bit more Ferrari, Lambo, lotus-ish...sport cars with simple but efficient pieces...

thanks guys

the metal sleeve is the right one. 16.5mm is the bore of an old knob i had on the shelf.

THANKS

I am amazed at how you can find the most mundane bits of info...although it seems mundane, to others it is exactly what they were looking for...

Hello

The original Shift knob has a steped hole. Therefore two drill diameters.

hmmm...not sure what you mean roland...do you mean there is smaller diameter hole deeper in the knob?

For the new knob I can just use the width of the shift shaft...plus a couple mm to compensate for the metal collar right?

Hmmm...I will let you guys know how it goes
