Turbocharger condition
I posted this on Rennlist and got only one response. Anyone with an opinion on the condition of the turbo, and the source of the oil leaks? Rebuild time?
I was told that the turbo is a Garrett T04 hybrid, 60-1 Anyone familiar with these? Good choice or time for an upgrade? I recently pulled the engine to work on over the winter. General clean up, painting, seal/line replacements, etc. Got the turbo off today. A LOT of oil/gunk on top, and oil on the bottom. Not sure where it is coming from. Also, I'm not sure of the condition on the exhaust side. See the pics, and let me know what you think. Also, there is no manufacturer or model # anywhere on the turbo?? The only # I could find was on the intake side - M33 (see pic #4). I have the records from the previous owner, and it does say that a "hybrid Garett turbocharger" was installed several years ago. Any ideas? Thanks! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I don't think that the oil on the outside of your turbo is coming from the turbo. You need to check things around that area like your distributor o-ring, chain tensioner and cam oil lines and connections, turbo oil line, etc. There doesn't appear to be damage to the blades or oil in the housing so you need to check the turbine shaft for play to assess the bearings. T04E 60-1 was the turbo I was originally going to use before I opted for a K27.

Kirk, that is a lot of gunk. It could be the oil feed line at the top of the turbo, there is a lot of air turbulence back there and makes a mess of everything. only the bottom of your timing cover looks dirty too, so it could be something from up above (like the feed line, but at the junction and not at the turbo itself).
I hope all is well with you and your progress with the clean up. I did the same this winter except I ripped into my engine too... Haven't seen you in a couple of years..

I think it may be coming from an area below the engine tins. Notice how grimy it is below the tin mounts. I think the engine's cooling fan could have sucked the oil up the charge pipe.
![]() It could be coming from the chain covers or chain boxes where they mount to the case. Then again, it could be coming from the lower valve cover.... ![]() Flipping the engine over once its on the stand will give you a better clue.

Hello
If had to take a WAG at whats going on in that photo i would have to say that the oil is being forced out from around the orange hose under boost. This is a common area for oil to collect on turbo motors. i would take that hose off clean it up very well and inspect it for cracking and chaffing. As far as the oil goes if its not smoking and using a bunch of oil i would start here and see if the problem goes away. cheers ed
