I don't understand. You're a swordmaker; how do you explain a chunk breaking off of a forging rather than the forging bending?

I know that one issue with running cheap, cast knock-offs with thin rims is the danger of their breaking apart from side impact rather than bending.

I know that, within reason, Fuchs (which are forged - cookie cutters are cast) which have been bent can be straightened. As I understand it, castings don't bend, they break. Can one draw an analogy here between a "real" forged sword and a cheap, cast knock-off made for looks but not fighting?

True, the canyon roads of Southern California are moderately desolate. The countryside of New England is much more populated. And speed limit enforcement is must stricter, in comparison. But those roads in the Berkshires around Lime Rock are absolutely gorgeous, and very tempting to take at speed. Best of luck for cooperative weather in April.

I was only 5 miles per hour above the speed limit. FYI. and the red limit is 6200 put the car about 55mph. I was going only about 45 at the fastest and we slowed down quite a bit before the wall.

Yeah, sounds about right. I'm 17 going on 29 which is probably why I bought a porsche and not a prius ;)

I was thinking my rebuild should look something like the following with a skyjacker lift kit and 44" mud swampers and maybe a snorkel from an old defender 90.

Hey Packy, sorry to hear about your crash. Don't let it get you down, you'll be able to build up another car, and hopefully things heal up on your girl. Maybe you'll have a great "how I met your mother" story some day while driving with her on some sweet roads in another sweet Porsche.

the roads all through out connecticut are very tempting, but I would never be able to forgive myself if I hurt someone else. the chances are just to high for someone to step out or drive out. really need to get on track and cut loose!

I've seen plenty of forged swords break during combat. Brittleness, rockwell hardness, internal flaws...all play a roll in whether they will bend or break.
Why this particular wheel broke, I don't know. But it did. And it is not a replica.
What really sucks is that all the wheels on the car were flawless.

But yeah, here ya go. :D

Yea, Lime Rock in April can have snow on the ground. OR track! Another alternative to the PCA is SCDA. I instruct with them, and they're pretty good. Super easy going, no lottery/signing up 4 months in advance, classroom instruction, individual instructor for you, and easy tech. If you want some date flexibility, take a look at their site.

I'll be there on apr. 17th. I have to attend an orientation before I go however. unfortunately, the HCR meeting is in albany! I'm in manhattan! not exactly close. I am a member of the CVR PCA and they have a workshop in southbury which is much closer. is that an alternative?
and yes I will be sure to come and say hello. and ask a billion questions. my car is in good shape, just don't look at the paint job right now!

Sports Car Driving Association - Performance Driving in a Safe and Controlled Environment

Sports Car Driving Association. It's a track day organization that teaches proper driving techniques for high speed track driving and racing. They have several run groups, novice, intermediate and advanced (and instructor). Novices MUST have an instructor IN the car. Intermediates may, if they like, or, in some cases, must. In between the track sessions, Bill Prout (or Whelen Corvette in the Speed World Challenge diver Eric Curran (also ex SCCA Improved Touring (IT)) who shows up once in a while) conduct classroom sessions to teach the lines, techniques, etc.

It seems like I'm on track constantly, but that's because I'm with students in two groups and in my own car in the instructor group. Lot's of track time. It depends on the track, but at Watkins Glen I think you get 5 20 minute sessions. Most students find 20 minutes to be just right, and many are "done" before the last session.

Anyway, it's a good organization, and it opens up more chances to hit the track, if you have date conflicts with the PCA. Just another option!

I have already sent them an email. but that was an hour ago. just waiting to hear from them. I will let you know when I know. looking forward to finally getting my 9 on track. having her put in proper track shape by Dan Jacobs right now. so I feel confident my car will be up to the task, even if she looks like a junkyard dog!
