Crashed my P-car on a first date

Yep, first date. The road was wet and narrow. I don't usually take the car out on rainy afternoons but, it was a first date after all. She said she wasn't afraid to go fast so had to find out if she was telling the truth. Pretty stupid, but hey, that's what insurance is for right? We started fishtailing and I stayed on the throttle until we got too close to the guard rail on the right then I had to put on the brakes. We hit the dirt wall mountain on the left. I buckled the front end, spun around and hit the rear. We probably hit the wall going 15mph (she thinks we were going 30mph) then we spun and hit the rear right corner. The amazing part is I drove it home then we went out for dinner and shots and ended up having a pretty good date :p. So HA!

The insurance Co claimed it as totalled so now I have a race car build on my hands and am looking for a new date car heheh. Unless anyone wants to buy a slightly used Porsche 911SC? :D I still can't believe I drove home. These cars are tough.

Dam that looks bad.... But as long as you and the girl are OK nothing else matters.

Will there be a second date?

Packy 02-19-2010 05:50 PM

We already had a second date, and a third. She was definitely my main concern. Cars are expendable but body parts are not. She is having back problems and the doc has her on muscle relaxers and pain killers. She has another doc visit on tuesday so we will see how she is doing then. I really really hope she doesn't have permanent damage. I on the other hand just got a bruise from the seat belt (she thought it was a hickey) and had a slightly sore neck but wasn't really hurt. I think she may just have a pulled or sprained back muscle, but i'm definitely no doctor.

Packy 02-19-2010 06:01 PM

All in all this was kinda fun. But that's our little secret. Makes me wanna be a crash derby driver.

wp935 02-19-2010 06:03 PM

Looks like the car and the gal may both be keepers. Maybe not in that order, depending upon ones perspective ....................

sc_rufctr 02-19-2010 06:03 PM

It may have been fun but if that was my Pcar I would be crying in my beer.

I hope your girl is OK. That's the most important thing right now.

Oh Haha 02-19-2010 06:11 PM

You are bragging about crashing your car?

You should be glad you didn't hurt anyone else(besides maybe your gf).

Pretty stupid move, IMO.

Packy 02-19-2010 06:14 PM

Yes, I am not denying the fact that it was a dumb move, and i'm not bragging. Thanks for the good thoughts Oh Haha. I like to try to stay positive and so does the girl who was with me.

Jagshund 02-19-2010 06:14 PM

If she's not hard on the eyes, here's what you do:

1. Hit her with a club-like object to make sure she's really hurting before the next appt.
2. Let her file a claim with the insurance company for all sorts of bs related to the wreck.
3. Marry her, wait for the ins. settlement and buy a Carrera GT or the like (like an orange 912 993 TT look).

Glad it turned out okay- I've known these cars were tough since a certain British television host dropped one from a crane.

Packy 02-19-2010 06:18 PM

Hey Cayman, can you be my lawyer? or at least my life adviser? Maybe we could get that on my insurance settlement too :)

KNS 02-19-2010 06:29 PM

Sort of a strange attitude you are taking with one less classic car in the world. Please slow down next time.

I hope your girlfriends injuries turn out okay...

WolfeMacleod 02-19-2010 06:44 PM

Don't feel too bad. I did something similar in September. On a third date.
Rain. Corner slick as snot. Crap tires. Not going fast, it just slipped out and kissed the curb.

efhughes3 02-19-2010 06:55 PM

I'd say your date is right. You didn't hit dirt at 15mph and whack the front end up like that. Even when I'm on a track in the rain, I don't screw around, its not worth this outcome.

davec 02-19-2010 06:57 PM

Hey, you guys should do some DE events! Learn to drive at speed and in the rain.

"Guy", not "guys".

I said I don't screw around, I didn't say I did get some speed out of the girl in the rain. It's all about smoothness, and no abrupt throttle or braking, which wasn't applied in this case. Rainy DE's are great learning environments.

Packy 02-19-2010 07:07 PM

I know. I'll never drive a porsche in the rain again, I think that was the first mistake leading to this result. I hope everyone else can learn from this too. It gives me a whole new respect for those dirt rally drivers.

Packy 02-19-2010 07:09 PM

Definitely going to do some more DEs once I fix my ol' girl. She's down, but not out.

madmmac 02-19-2010 07:11 PM

Wow, you hit her in the front and the back on your first date!! Congrats.

Oh...........it was your car.

Sorry,

x2. there is no way all that damage was from a 15mph crash, unless what you hit was doing 35+mph.

Dude, are you sure your girl is not dating the doctor???:D
Glad you are both OK, and don't let that stop you from driving a Porsche in the rain; these cars love that ****!;) Just learn to smooth your motions on the wet.

paulgtr 02-19-2010 07:52 PM

I have driven my 9 in all kinds of nasty rain. I actually was very suprised by how well it handled the rain. how are your tires?

WRGREENER 02-19-2010 07:55 PM

Ok, enough about the car... Where are the pictures of you date???

carrera turbo 02-19-2010 08:26 PM

15 M.P.H. I don't think so i put a car back together that hit a guard rail at 40ish and it was no where near as bad as your car is. im thinking that car is more of a parts car by the looks of the door alignment.

im thinking you should buy a C4 less likely to spin out.

Dude, glad you are OK.. One the Rain note.. I drove my car in the heart of Katrina!!! Hydroplaned here and there but kept it under control with some pilots on the car.

DARISC 02-19-2010 09:55 PM

Think about it; it rains a lot in Germany, the Porsche is German and is designed, built and tested on Germany's roads - both wet and dry. A 911 is as safe as and handles as well or better in the wet than any other car...if it's driven properly.

Sure, the rear weight bias provides for the dreaded pendulum effect that makes the car swap ends if one doesn't understand its dynamics and errs in judgement, and that pendulum effect happens more abruptly and at lower speeds in the wet, but the car is equally capable on wet and dry roads when driven by a capable driver.

I'm in SoCal, it doesn't rain much, but I love driving my SC in it when it does (but I'm also terrified of the idiots out there with me who haven't a clue about how to drive in the wet).

It's a poor craftsman who blames his tools. :)

Packy 02-19-2010 10:17 PM

Believe me, I am in no way denying the fact that it was my fault. I loved the car and had a hell of a week and a half thinking about the accident. There could be many reasons why I f*cked this one up -2nd gear, 5500rpms, wet road, too much throttle on a turn, trying to show off, driving in the rain. My tires are okay, probably about 50% tread. I actually stayed on the throttle when it started to lose grip but when I got too close to the guard rail on the right I hit the brakes and it was all over. We didn't hit the guard rail but swerved pretty hard left and hit the dirt/rock wall then pulled a 180 and hit the big butt booty. One thing I keep going over in my mind was not putting the clutch in when I hit the brakes. The engine runs fine but I hope I have no valve damage from rolling backwards after we pulled a 180. I am 99% sure of no engine damage but I am going to check the valves and probably drop the engine just in case.

By the way, I know the physics very well of these cars and how they drive. I just made a mistake.

I was thinking of naming her after Britney Spears. She use to have a body every man wanted to be inside of but now she is trash. HA! I need a Britney sticker like the ones they have on the side of old war planes.

pwd72s 02-19-2010 10:38 PM

My first impulse was to write something sarcastic...but naw...poor Packy feels bad enough.

Geronimo '74 02-20-2010 12:01 AM

You should drive more safely.
In the rain, with a passenger, 2nd gear, 5500RPM, in a turn, WTF were you thinking??

That girl must like you A LOT! Enough to continue the date after you gave her a back-injury...

Don't take this the wrong way but if I had to guess your age after reading this, I would say you're about 17....

On the other hand, we've all F-ed up in some way or another.
Hopefully your girl recovers swiftly, back injuries can linger for a long time.
I hope the bruise on your ego will remind you to be more careful next time...
(And I'm sorry about the car, I hope you feel an appropriate amount of guilt and get her fixed)

Christ. 5500 rpm in 2nd gear. I think my car (assuming no wheelspin) would be doing about 60-70 mph! 15 mph is trundling through a parking lot just above idle.

Hope the girl turns out fine.

OP's not Russian by any chance...?

yelcab1 02-20-2010 01:25 AM

I am happy you are reflecting on this. It is wrong to drive that recklessly on the street and it was lucky that no other cars were involved.

lateapex911 02-20-2010 01:58 AM

TTIWWOP
;)

Of the girl!
Oh, get out and do some DEs. Never hurts. And TREAD on the tires is EVERYthing...

Buckterrier 02-20-2010 03:41 AM

I did a DE at Lime Rock Park this past August. The last session was in the rain. A great way of learning the cars, & your capabilities in a controlled environment.

Glad you and your date are safe.

I don't understand this statement at all. We all have had a fender bender at some point. That doesn't mean you give up driving Porsches in the rain or any other particular weather situation - learn to drive them in all types of conditions, and drive within the limitations of your ability, the environment and the car you're in.

Nope, it's authentic. :( And, the wheel that came from the factory, too...

kach22i 02-20-2010 08:00 AM

A few years ago near Hell Michigan a guy in a 996 was showing off for a new gal in the car. Neither one made it out of the turn alive.

Keep it safe.

Having been on some Pelican drives, there are some out there who know some pretty fast angels. ;)

paulgtr 02-20-2010 08:14 AM

I can just imagine. but those canyon roads are pretty desolate right? not a lot of intersections I hope. that is my fear. can't wait to do my first DE day in april at lime rock. have never felt like I could really drive my car as it should be on the roads. just not prudent
