Q on cylinder differences + PICS
Maybe a stupid question but I'll ask it anyway...
Are cylinders from an SC, which I believe to be 95mm, interchangeable with those of a 3.2??? (let's say they are both Nikasil) The difference between these engines is the crank, is it not? Other than the head gasket, are there any other differences between these two types of cylinders? The reason I ask this is when I removed the cylinders from my engine, I found three of them with a head gasket (1, 2 and 3, so left side) and the ones on the other side did not. My guess is that on of the PO's had a leak between the heads and the barrels and decided to have a groove machined and a gasket installed. Or maybe worse, he had some catastrophic failure and needed to fixed it. Could it be, is it possible that instead of having the cylinders grooved, that he used cylinders of a 3.0 litre, which already have the groove and gasket? If he had the originals machined, I will do the remaining three as well. PIC cylinder 3 (from left side) with gasket. ![]() PIC cylinder 4 (from right side) without gasket. ![]()

The pistons on both are 95mm, the cylinders are the same except for the sealing ring grooves. If you are going to have them bored it is not recommended use the 3.0 cylinders with the sealing ring, if you are just putting it back together it makes no difference and you can just use the cylinders as is with the sealing rings.
This is not based upon personal experience only what I have read on this board and Bruce Anderson's Book. The throw is longer on the 3.2 than the 3.0 which gives the 3.2 its greater displacement. The Sealing rings on the 3.0 cylinders look stock thickness and at least they are the nickisils. Are you sure you have a 3.2 case and crank? Are there different part numbers on the cylinders? Shane,
Thanks for your answer. I'm positive that I have a 3.2 and not a 3 litre. Cylinders are not going to be bored. What I probably will do is have the other three machined in order to accept the head gasket. If I'm not mistaken, I can simply use the 3 litre gaskets (same 95mm diameter). This way I will have all six with a gasket. I don't know if it's necessary but three gaskets on one side seems odd to me. Cylinders are at the mechanic's shop to be cleaned. Will check part numbers tomorrow.

It may be cheaper to buy 3, 3.0 liter cylinders if you are that concerned, you will probably have a hard time finding the 3.2 cylinders in a set of three. If you are not increasing displacement then the cylinders as you have them will work fine. Of course the best thing to do would be to call EBS and see what options they may have available, they might have an odd set of 3.0's I am sure they would trade you some 3.0 nickies for your 3.2's and they would probably throw in a set of sealing rings. I would.

Check the inside piston numbers and make sure they are all matching. 95P36++ is Carrera numbers inside the piston.
Its not likely they put 3.0 pistons in with the cylinders but it could be possible. Watch your torque specs on the heads as they are different from 3.0 to 3.2 Bruce |
