Solo2: shortest gears ??
I'm setting up my Carrera 3.0 to run in the A Street Prepared Class in Solo2.
What is the shortest gear stack I can run ? I have a 1/2 & 1/2 915 gear box. TIA

You can't legally change individual gears or the ring and pinion from what came stock in whatever box on your line in the Solo 2 rulebook (911 Non-Turbo '65-89) you decide to use. If you want the shortest 915 gear set then you would use a '72-74 5 speed box with the stock 7:31 ring and pinion.

Thanks, Randy.
That's what I thought. This won't be a dedicated autocross car. So I'll have to change classes. Because I want to put a new gear stack in the car. For everyday driving fun. So I guess that takes me to a modified class, doesn't it? Reading the Solo2 book it gets kind of vague. Has 3 911 specs. 2.2-2.4. 2.7-2.8 and 3.5-3.6. All with weights and wheel widths I believe. I 've been pouring over the Street Prepared Section. Looks like I'll have to do the same on modified section. But there's a silver lining to every dark cloud. I guess this will allow me to back date my car to a 3.0 RS look alike. ( like the one in Peter Morgan's " Original Porsche 911" book, page 48 ). GP White with Blue Fuch's and blue stripe. Plus the glass bumpers. Thanks for the verification. Hope to make it over to Bremerton a couple times next summer.

Cary,
Sounds like a fun project! As you say, changing the individual gears puts you in Modified, where a Porsche is uncompetitive. If you use your stock gearbox and change just the ring and pinion, you can stay in Prepared. Just a thought - as you may know, getting carbs to run well in autocross is a real challenge, so if you are considering F Prepared as a class, check out which engine sizes allow you to use fuel injection. A 3.0 RS look with 2.7/2.8L with Bosch MFI, 2100 lb, 16x10 wheels, and fiberglass body panels would be cool! Randy Wells |

Randy, been doing some more reading ............
Looking at Prepared F. Interpretation of the 2001 Solo Rule book. I was looking at 15.10.R.2.a. And 15.10.S.2. "Any gear ratio, limited slip or locked differential is permitted". What do those let you change ? Or am I missing another piece ? Pulled the 2001 PCA/PNWR Auto Cross rules off the website. Looks like I can come over and run in GTO. With the shortened gear stack ? And here in the Big Sky SCCA region. I will always get bumped to modified because of the lack of cars. Even from ASP. We either have stock or full blown race cars. Just a few in the middle. TIA for your thoughts and help.

Cary, you may be right about the individual gear ratio, however I would talk with Greg Fordahl (www.fordahlmotorsorts.com) about that since he runs in F Prepared and knows Solo2 rules better than anyone I know. You could also ask him about what class your car will be in at PNW PCA. I know that too much fiberglass will bump you to MO. Hope to see you soon!

I submitted the Section 15 questions to Howard Duncan at SCCA HQ. Heres what he wrote.
Mr. Kutter, All of the sections you mentioned would cover alternate gear ratios for your 911 in the Prepared Category. 911s are classed in both FP and AP, depending on engine displacement and other modifications. Howard Duncan SCCA Rally/Solo Project Manager 303-779-6622, FAX 303-694-3654 1-800-770-2055 So it looks like with the changes I want to make, I'll move to Prepared F. Which gives me a little more flexibility for "enhancements". Which over here, will bump me to Modified with the "hot shoes". And being the "green weeny" they're giving me lots of help. Which I'm sure will stop when I get to within 3-4 seconds ( a couple cone penalties, LOL ) Thanks for all the help. I did write an e-mail to Greg also.
