Suddenly Lean - Left Stranded

Cold crank today was way lean - touching pedal resulted in popping, idle was low. I elevated my sensor plate ever so slightly and everything came back to life. Figured the plate was getting sticky and I could address it later.

Car continues to run like a champ for the next 20 or so minutes. Next thing I know the rpms drop while at a light. Spitting and popping ensue. I make it to the next turn off and pull into a parking lot. Running super lean again.

This time moving the sensor plate does not work.

So here I am. Stranded wondering what the issue could be. It runs, but it won't get me home.

Thoughts?

Does the fuel pump run if you have the ignition on and you lift the sensor plate?

the 02 relay gets pretty hot for some reason. They go out pretty often. Most guys dont know it and adjust mix accordingly.

Back home now. Looks like my sig doesn't work when using my iPhone.

I was SOOOO close to leaving today without my bag of various relays. Glad I grabbed them ... and glad I had a spare.

Thanks everyone.

How did you determine that was the problem? Shot in the dark kind of thing? You had the relay and thought, "I wonder"?

I always keep extra relays, cdi, coil, etc "just in case" something happens while on the road - I take a lot of long distance trips in it. They are easy to store and certainly worth the effort to have on hand.

Honestly I was in no mood to troubleshoot car issues today. But while I was waiting on the tow truck I called a local Pelican who suggested that I try swapping the 02 relay.

It made sense b/c it controls the frequency valve and all of my CIS is in good order. I really didn't think that it could have been a sudden vacuum leak b/c I rebuilt the engine about 1 1/2 years ago and replaced nearly all of my hoses. Couldn't be the WUR b/c it would not fail suddenly - would be more incremental.

I encourage those of you with later CIS cars to unplug your relay just to be familiar with the symptoms. It will still run but it will be rough.

Someone suggested that mine was failing so I pulled the cover off and it looked good inside after 25 years in service. Maybe I'll order a second to have on hand.

I have a motronic 944 and don't leave home without the spare DME relay!

sorry i missed your call. i was working on the house. tim was up helping.
man, you have had some issues lately. mine started doing the same thing friday. no idle at all in the morning but it was fine going home.

this is one of the advantages of the earlier cis systems, no electrics to leave you stranded. as long as my fuel pump and cd work, im good to go.

i keep the spares tucked awayy in fornt of the spare tire, wrapped in a towel. dont tell the wife, its one of her good ones.
