The mid-year cap/plug changover screwed my world up for about a month. No help from the manufacturer, they never returned phone calls - and I actually had a specific name that I was given to talk to.

I posted a WTB over on the parts section for the right kind of gland nut, someone did have a set and sold them to me. You might try that before you crap out on the inserts or endure any more elevator music.

I'll look through my parts records and see if I have any notes about the part number.

Icemaster has an excellent point here...My Bilstein's shipped with both cap styles. I used the caps for my configuration and gave the others to someone in need of the old style caps. That way I didn't have spare parts laying around that I couldnt use, and someone else was very appreciative.;)

Replaced my front struts today...pretty easy job overall, took about 30 minutes per side. Used large channel locks to unscrew the old strut. Hard to compress the new strut to get it through the mounting hole up top, gently took a took a hammer to it to get it to compress . Old struts in there were Sachs, yuk...they moved up and down very easy, clearly shot. My ride height, however, did not change much, maybe 1/4". When I changed the rears shocks out about a month ago, ride height increased by about an inch.

Here's some pics of the finished product...now I have bilstein sports all around.

The questions live on.. 2012

Hello,

I decided to use the closest old thread rather than start a new one.
I too have Boge struts (part.no.901-341-080-01 Right) on my 912 targa, 1969. It shares the same front shock layout as the later cars here, design is from 10/1968 to 1985, Bilstein part no. P36-0112.

Some questions :
  1. Inverted inserts? folks at Elephant Racing said I could fit Bilstein inserts of the upside down type, cylinder up- rod down, in the Boge strut. Maybe they misunderstood my question, because I can't see how. What about the hole needed for the pin? Or maybe no pin on Bilstein's for Boge strut?
  2. I also wonder how all persons posted Boge strut photos green. Were they painted over? I think original Boges are white.
  3. I am now confused what's included in the insert replacement and what not. I guess only the piston/rod, a couple of nuts and the screw-on cap (in 2 sizes?). However some internet stores show pictures of green tube as well
  4. The shocks in place now must be shot, not only do I not need to compress them out, down from the dome, but the rod actually falls down by gravity within minutes...

Here are some pictures of my strut in place

and here of a Bilstein strut with the hole for the pin (inverted type) from Wayne Dempsey's Technical article and the 101 book.
