Question Modifying a 902/0 Transmission

I would like to pick your brains with a question.. perhaps stupid but "if one does not ask, one will never learn".

I have a 1966 911 with a 901 transmission which I recently busted (sheared input shaft) trying to impress the wife with how fast I could take off in my 911! as far I can tell She is still laughing!!

I my search for a replacement 901 . I have got my hands on a 914 5 speed transmission and a 902/0 4 speed 911 transmission.

Now here is the $1000 question..
I believe the 914 transmission core is the same as the 901 type..
( Am I wrong here? )
now.. could I take the 914 guts and transplant them to the 902/0 transmission thus making it a 5 speed transmission???

I want to hear your expert comments even if it is to call me names. !!

PS
In case some of you are wondering why I don't repair the original transmission..? well I am going to.. once a find a replacement transmission I am planning to do a complete overhaul and keep it as a spare .

Hello

Its a big Puzzle.

You can reverse the R&P setup and just swap the fork levers and the nosecone on the 914 unit.

Intermixing parts is not the real problem. themajor problem is seting the parts to optimum messurments.

i would use the mainshaft and related 2nd gear out of the 914, and just fix your trans. gear ratio is everything for performance, and 914 ratios work better for the 4 cylinders. the 914 2nd gear (mainshaft) ratio was used in several early 901 trannys for 911s.

Or just use the 4 speed and then you don't have to worry about sheering 1st gear off again.

your idea I had already given it a thought , to swap the transmission nosecone, to remove the side shift linkage and install the actuator and actuator forks from the 901/2 tranny..

however, The 914 intermediate case appears to be thicker that the 911 intermediate casing.. by approx 3/4 of an inch..

the next thing will be to check if it will still fit along the engine in the engine compartment.. since the overall assy. will be a bit longer.

would you recommend interchanging gear assemblies.. ??? I am not too keen about mixing gear assemblies since they are already run and the wear patterns will be different..

I have never driven a 911 with a 4 speed..
I have a 1964 beetle with a 4 speed and it feels funny, then again it is only a four cylinder..

what is the feeling on a 911?
