Porsche Crest Broken Targa Bolt Situation

Trying to remove the Targa top from my 1975 911 and… snap! It's the two-pronged "bolt" into which the handles go to affix and lock down the roof to the front windshield. It's an old part but I wasn't applying too much pressure. I've attached two pics. One is the left drivers side that is correct and unbroken. The right passenger side is the broken one. No idea how to even get the targa off now without doing further damage. Just in time for Spring, right? The top was stripped down and restored 4 years ago but none of the metal parts were replaced.

Ugh. Any ideas?

[Sorry for the huge pics]

I found a solution for just this problem. Lemme find the thread which has the answer. In short, that split locking bolt can be removed and replaced by the part I'll find for you. Only thing is that it is not a factory part, and it takes some courage to do. You'll have to open up the lockitself in order to get to it.

Question about the release lock on my targa top - ie. broken slot for the handle

Regarding the release mechanism for the targa top, ie. broken slot for the handle

nice find Michael - significantly cheaper than replacing the entire top latch!

Wow. God bless the Pelican Forum. Amazing find. I tried to find something in previous posts and didn't come up with anything. Awesome. Thank you very much Michael.

So wait re: your posts, did you ever get it fixed on your own or did your mechanic figure it out?

My mechanic ended up figuring it out. It cost me about 1.5 hours of labor. So, a lot less than a new lock.

He said that the hardest part was bending the metal that is folded over to keep the two halves of the lock together.

But, I haven't had any problems using the targa top on my car once i got it back.

Ah, I see. Yeah, this seems like it might require the work of a professional, given my proclivity to make matters worse when attempting repairs.

Again, thanks for the input.

Targa Top problem

Couple choices.
1. You can try a screw driver to turn latch receiver
2.You must remove the vinyl cover on the arm. Once this is done you can use vise grip pliers to loosen bolts
3. Did the latch break because of a damage handle or was seal replaced?

Certainly replacing the latch or replacing the part is the best way to go but many years ago I had the same thing happen. I drilled a 1/4" x 1/4" hole in the center and epoxied a torx head in the hole. I used a 1/4" ratchet to open and close the latch. It didn't look the best but it worked great for many years.
