Radio noise
I just replaced the Blau stock radio in my 87 carrera and I have a constant whine and static in the speakers even at no volume. Is there a filter of sorts to install or another approach to the problem.Idon't recall if the old set had that problem since I seldom used it since purchase. Thanks for your reply

Just ground the case to the chassis. Plug wires can cause these symptoms. Good luck, Gerry |
You can get a noise eliminator at Radio Shack or similar place.
It looks like a small tin can with a wire at each end (or terminal) with the center of the can having a tab with a hole to bolt the unit to something metal and grounded. Inside the can is a coil and capacitor, and this is what shorts the noise to ground, They are rated for current (amps) so get one that is big enough to do the job. This unit goes into the power line just before the radio, as close as possible. Hope this helps Bob |
Thanks all, I'll try the ground first and then the filter.

if you rev the engine will the tone of the whine change? If so you are getting a type of feedback from the alternator. We used to get this noise all the time when installing big amps back in the day.
If this is the case the "filter" you are looking for is a "ground loop isolator", anyway that is what we used 20 years ago, i bet not much has changed. Kevin |
I bet the filter won't do the trick,..let's see.

I developed noise after MSD install
I then used the the $40 MSD noise filter to clear it if the noise just happened one day out of nowhere i usually go after rebuilding the alternator to start track down in this thread's case i'd start by fixing the radio |
ground plane on the radio has to be right (first)...RoninLB's point is well made...first things first.

Had precisely the problem you mention, when I installed a new Sony radio in my
'80SC. Went to Radio Shack and bought the "radio noise filter". I installed it in the 12V pwr line to the radio. Voila!! noise all gone. Don't make it more difficult than necessary. It seems the noise signal is riding on the 12v from the alternator. At least thats my thought. Give it a try, as it's pretty inexpensive! |

x1000 check and double check the ground for your radio first. |
