Trunk seal install

I'm about to re-do the front hood seal on my 84 Targa, and I have a quick question. The last time I did this, it was on my 89 964. I don't remember splitting the seal at all. I remember just slipping it over the hood, and gluing it into the channel. I was doing a test fit yesterday, and it didn't seem like I could squeeze the seal between the cowl and the hood (tight gap). Seemed like the only way to get it in there was to cut it. I don't remember cutting the 964's seal. Do I remember wrong?

I did a search, and came up empty.

Thanks,

Ken
