CIS Injector Sleeve and seal,

I pulled the engine out of my 82 911SC for a clutch job, and while they were easy to get to, I pulled out my injectors and had them cleaned and tested by my mechanic. The good news is they all checked out OK, the bad news is 4 of the 6 the sleeves came out with them. I think I should replace the O-rings on the 4 that came out, but am a little stumped as to how to do this. Here is a pic of one of the sleeves, with the parts diagram. The reddish thing is #51, and the black ring on it is #52.


The part is listed as an O-ring, but it feels like it is hard plastic (I am guessing 20 years of heat made it a little hard). Any suggestions on how to remove the O-ring without destroying the sleeve? The local Porsche dealer has the sleeves in stock, but no O-rings. I don't suppose that a new sleeve comes with a new O-ring already installed (that would be WAY too easy).

Any hints from someone who has done this would be greatly appreciated.

Do yourself a big favor and replace all the parts. Replace the sleeve and the o-rings on the inside and outside of the sleeve. They're all cheap. The sleeves get really brittle over time. Mine completely disintegrated when I removed them. Your dealer should have them in stock. If he doesn't, check with someone that deals with air cooled VW's. Those guys seem to have a lot of parts for older Porsches. There's a parts place here that has hooked me up on several occasions.

Dude, these are cheap parts to replace. We have the sleeves, the injector o-rings, the sleeve o-rings, and a whole bunch of other stuff you might want to replace. Check it out in our new CIS catalog section:

If you wanted to replace the sleeves, how do you get them out?

Because it gets hot in there, the plastic usually is very brittle (and old too). You usually have to pick out the plastic with a pick or a knife - not something that you would necessarily want to do with the manifolds still attached to the heads...

Sorry Wayne. Didn't mean to take business away from you. Just thought if time was really critical, he could try some of the other shops in his area that handle air cooled parts, instead of having to wait for parts to be shipped out.

Okay you guys have me worried................I have the original CIS model (1973.5) and my injectors are not in the manifold but in the HEAD!

Stupid question time..............do I have the sleeves as well? or just the rubber seals? Help.

bob, your seals are T shaped, and there is no sleeve.

I would like to replace mine as well; always heard that they are in there pretty good. Kind of surprised that yours just popped-out. Anyone out there removed sleeves,(intentionally), with engine in car and together?

I did this job last summer. The injectors and large injector o-rings just pull out.

The sleeves and their o-rings are another story. I had 3 of them (lucky) pull out with the injector, and two others I got out by threading a long, large sheet metal screw into the hole and pulling upward with whatever I could get on it. I could not get this screw into cyl #4, so I'll have to get that one next time I have the engine out with the intake off. Use caution as these pieces are brittle and can fall into the intake. You can get some of these runners off with the engine in the car, but others would be difficult or impossible w/o removing the airbox.
