Post CV Joint Help

OK. I'm attempting my second set of CV joints. My first venture was on a '91 Toyota Camry. It all went great except the test drive. It locked up. In disgust, I had towed to my favorite mechanic. He said I only made one mistake. I did not give the joint a pop with a plastic mallet to insure that the end of the joint that goes into the transmission set firmly in the clip. It bound up because it came out of the transmission.

My question IS, is any such technique necessary to insure that the CV joint on my 911 ('81 Targa) does not come out of the transmission? I do have two tech articles, but they are both for VW's. I did not see anything about seating the joint. Any other helpful hint about doing this job would be greatly appreciated.

Please respond. I REALLY don't want to injure my baby.

Your not taking it out of the gear box. Just unbolting it from the flange. A different type arrangement. Bolts are allen head and must torqued.
