Question CDI's; Permatune vs. Bosch

I've read threads where people prefer the Bosch CDI (3 pim) to the Permatune. Does anybody have some hard data on why the Bosch is better?

I've seen waaaaay more permatune units fail compared to OEM Bosch units.

Although, an upgrade to an MSD unit is better than the Bosch CDI.

+1

Permatune units do fail a lot more often! I've had one fail on me already and a friend of mine just had his fail on him a couple of months ago. Go with a Bosch unit!

I don't think you'll get any "hard data", as in records of units failing or comparisons of length of time before failure--you'll get lots of anecdotal information however (like the above posts) which has led to the consensus that Bosch is the unit to choose.

no hard data, but if you go permatune make sure it's the blue and not the silver box

The blue Perma-Tunes are 25+ years old. Most still work if you can find them.

The new ones are black from about 2004 on. The black ones are the latest ignition technology tailored for the Porsche. My buddy in Dallas dynoed an SC and got 9 HP over the MSD. He switched from the MSD because he was tired of replacing caps, rotors and spark plug resistors. No problems since then.

I have PermaTune, not by choice, installed by the PO in 1992. When it went bad last year went back with PT...the 1st one out of the box was bad. 2nd one doing fine. If you go with PT rember to get a PT coil, Bosch is not compatable.

Permatunes will fail intermitently, just cutting off/out while driving. Inquires to the Permatune folks kept resulting in statements that it must be my grounding. Replaced with bosch and have never had another problem.

permatune is a reliabilty thing.

i dont think MSD is an upgrade to a stock engine except that the bosch units are old and the capacitors are going bad in them more and more. they can be repaired though.
i have an MSD, but it was a cost issue for me, plus i like the fact that i can buy an MSD just about anywhere. on the down side, i can fix the bosch units. i had a permadoom in my car that went bad.
