Front hub resistance = caliper hang?

Could use some help with a diagnosis.
I just got around to finally preparing to start replacing my original rubber brake hoses in combo with a brake flush, but before I started I noticed my front right wheel hub does not turn freely - so I'm in holding up. There is some even friction and slight dragging sound.

The car had passed 2 state inspections with no warning by the wrench on the impending brake work - and she was in the garage all winter until we had a warm spell 2 weeks ago.

I also don't have good PO history on the brake maintenance - other than a flush 3 yrs ago.

I did a search and see how to check the bearings (grip 12 and 6). But could this be the sign of a hanging caliper? Am I looking at a caliper rebuild as a fix?

I also found both front rotors have a lip - not sure if that's normal although I've heard of rust lip. Can you advise how I deal with this if at all?

Thanks very much

Sounds like it's time for that caliper rebuild! Just did mine (see my post below). So get the rebuild kits, new pads, new brake lines, lots of fluid, a power bleeder. And all the tools and dive in! Check the diameter of the rotors to see if there worn out. Ore just get new ones, there not to expensive. Oh yeah, get the brake sensors for your Carrera, enjoy.

Is one wheel darker than the others, indicating brake pad wear/ dragging? If you put your hand on the wheel, is it hot? Have you measured the rotor thickness with a micrometer gauge?

Your calipers may be fine. It is not unusual to have a very slight dragging of the pads on the discs - evenly, both sides. They should just be slightly touching, not dragging the rotor to a stop.

Yes SLIGHT dragging is fine, like able to turn by hand.

Thanks for the input fellas.

Jim - I will prepare for this as you say - I have the fluid and motive power bleeder - I just have to order the rebuild kit. In the meantime I guess I'll research and mic the rotor to see if it's serviceable or needs replacement. (saw the uuggg in your post and thought ugg is right)

rusnak - no disc discoloration from hi-temps - both fronts look clean and similar. I will mic it when I get home. Car was in the garage all day before I started, so I didn't bother checking for heat from friction.

KNS - I'm no expert, but I believe the LF hub exhibits what I'd characterize as a normal drag due to the disks. If I give it a good turn/spin - it continues to rotate (like one turn). But I have to use much more force on the Front Right hub and it stops as soon as I stop moving it. I can move it with one hand tho', just have to get on it.

it's my first foray into brakes, so it's all new to me - thanks.

Just going to be a drag (no pun intended) because it's nice out and I am slow (between researching and doing)- but brakes are a priority.

Thanks again very much.

Steely,

I was asking if the wheel is darker, which would be brake dust wearing off of the pad due to a dragging caliper. If both wheels are the same color, and the car is not pulling to one side under either cruising or under braking, and one wheel does not feel hotter to the touch than the other, then I would say most likely you're ok.

rusnak - I understand now - both wheels have the same amount of dust/dirt.

I guess it's a question of degrees of friction and I just didn't have the touch.
I was preparing myself (mentally), but I'd be very glad not to 'go there' if I don't have to.

Thanks!
