Porsche Crest My 1977 Porsche 911S

I am new to the site and want to share my find!

Late last fall I found a Porsche for sale on the local Kijiji site and liked what I saw. I contacted the owner and had a lengthy conversation with him. It wasn't until recently - early February - when I made the trip to go and see the car. The car was approximately 250 kms. away (Canada eh) and stored in a heated garage! (The owner has 3 garages attached to the house as well as a separate unit in the back yard - all heated!)

The car - 1977 Porsche 911S, a 2.7l and 5 speed with a sunroof.

The Good:

This car came from the state of Georgia approximately 10 years ago. The current owner has had it for about 7 years. He has done some very extensive repairs to the car. As recent as last year the engine was completely rebuilt! At the same time the transmission was stripped and rebuilt. (I have all the bills/receipts listing all the parts used) This was done by a Porsche expert well known in the region. The engine is strong and pulls like crazy! The tranny is great but the shifter is very sloppy and will be addressed sooner rather than later! I am thinking of a WEVO short shift kit.

All the rear boots have been replaced as well as the axles. The brakes are standard front and rear and work well. The wheels are Fuchs 6X15 with brand new Toyo tires 205/60/15.

I am not sure about the suspension - I have driven very few Porsches so I am not too familiar with the handling characteristics. I will live with this for the time.

The body is in great shape - totally rust free! I crawled under the car and checked the weak points - fender wells, rock panels, doors, door jams, under the hoods and battery shelf. The torsion points are rust free and solid. The car has been repainted and when done all the panels were removed - no overspray on the rubbers around the front and back windows or even in the door jams or under the car. The problem is at certain angles you can see the sanding marks here and there - not well done!

The Bad:

The interior - the dash is in great shape actually - no crack or splits in the pad and the face is clean. The switches leave alot to be desired - none of the internal lighting works, the instruments work but again the lighting is gone, the heater controls are falling out of the dash. The seats I would like to replace with something a little firmer - something aftermarket possibly. (The current dollar situation is good for me - it's the damned shipping costs that hurt!) I would like to get rid od the "shag" carpet on the door panels and the rear seat back. The sunroof works great but the roof liner is filthy as well as the panel within the sunroof - another for the list of to do. Thankfully the Porsche came with a smaller steering wheel otherwise I would not be able to sit in the car. (Tried several other Porsches with original steering wheels - I could not get in!)

I am pleased with the car overall - I know that the 2.7 motor is not the most desireable but it is rebuilt with all the necessary replacement pieces. The air pump has been removed as well a header exhaust with an aftermarket muffler installed. This car just sounds great and pulls like crazy.

I look forward to continued reading on this board and seeking advised from the learned members!

Congratulations and welcome to the Forum! Nice, clean looking car and it sounds like the most important things--engine, tranny, rust, are accounted for. Everything you mention as "bad" is relatively minor and only adds to the "enjoyment" of owning an early car, IMO. You will enjoy the ride, and learn tons here. Welcome, again, and your car is a real beauty!

Nice looking ride Reifle. Welcome to the board. In one pic it looks golden in the other beige, can you tell us what color is it? Take some pics of the interior too, everybody loves pics here.

Take care.

Great looking car.

For the interior lights, check the switches in the door jams, the contacts are never clean.

Hmm would this car have come with black door handles?

You gonna stick that subwoofer in and bounce down the road? Please tell me no.

I have a 76 in about the same condition.. had no documentation on it.. still has california thermal destroyers on it and I bounce off the rev limiter daily.

P.S. with both need H4 headlights

P.S.S. looks like you still have the american ride height.. drop it and it will transform the car.. it did mine..

as far as the black handles they are correct for 77 mine has them and it looks like the window trim has faded to the light grayish silver color.

cheers ed
