1988 Carrera Engine Lid

My 1988 Carrera coupe has the spoiler and rear windshield wiper option. I am thinking about changing the lid with the spoiler-less, standard lid. I would keep the original lid intact so I could reinstall it WHEN I change my mind later! A couple of questions: Does the wiper assembly fit on a standard lid or are two types of "standard" engine lids? Or, was the wiper option only available with the spoiler option?

Or maybe I should ask for someone to talk me out of doing this!

Thanks in advance.

I have a naked rear lid and I prefer the the look without the tail. Having said that I can't tell you if there were two lids or the rear wiper was only an option with the tail. I have never had any time where I would have needed it. I use Rain-X or Aquapel for the windows. Rarely use the wipers with the windows being treated.

i would go ahead and do it and like you said keep the original if you ever want to go back. Best of both

You can keep the rear wiper without the tail, I've seen Carreras with stock rear wiper and no tail. You might have to modify the grille but other than that you should be fine.

Take care.

I've found a lid/grill from a 1988 Carrera, Grand Prix White located close by. It seems the owner did the reverse modification to his car. Anyway, I think I'll buy it and give it a try.

I guess I will have to remove the front spoiler to complete the conversion.

This forum is such a great resource - Thanks for your input.

Leave the front spoiler on the car, it's perfectly OK to have the front one without the tail.

Take care.

My '87 has the standard rear lid with a rear wiper. It also has the front spoiler. It's gone 160,000 miles like that, so you'll be OK.
