speakers
I am replacing the speakers in my 87.
Tweeks mentions that only true 5" by Pioneer will drop right in the mounts in the doors. Is this true for a 87? I am looking at 5.25" Infinity Kappa Series 52.3i for the doors and 4x6 Kappa Plate 462.3cfp's for the rear deck. I do not want to alter the panels or sheet metal. Please advise. Randy

I think those are the exact same speakers I put in my '86 Carrera. I can check the model numbers if you'd like. They are a direct plug-in, no drilling or cutting required replacement. You'll have to use the speaker grills that come with the new speakers in the front - the stock ones won't work. For the rears, I just put the new speakers (they didn't come with grills) under the rear deck cover (requires removal of the deck cover to get them under there) and used the crappy, sun-cracked stock speaker grills. Again, no drilling, no cutting. I can take some pictures if you're interested.
My car came with a Blaupunkt Monterey am/fm/cassette and just the four speakers in the doors and the rear deck. I've seen some later models with separate tweeters in the doors - mine did not have those. Hope this helps, Chris. |

Thanks for the help.
I am going to order them right now!! I liked the carpeted sub panel idea for the rear footwell area.

I have the same set up in my '84. It sounds great! Infinity makes some great component speakers. They sound best if you move more of the sound to the front speakers. Obviously the 5 1/4 inchers with play a bit louder and handle more bass with less disrortion so let the rear speakers play more of a rear fill role. Enjoy!

not true!!
I also have a 87 and have Boston Pro Series 5 1/4" in the front. I did alter the door a bit for the tweeters- but you don't have to install component speakers if you don't want to. Pioneer is not known for superior audio performance. They produce mid grade products at best. Look into the Bostons, and MB Quarts for the best sound (you already have the best car- right?). Next on the list would be Infiniti Kappa- and if you are planning on those in the back why not match them in the front w/ a set of 5 1/4"s? You hear about voice matching in home stereo a bunch- but it is just as important in car audio.
Lastly, look at having an amp installed. Even the cheapo (Pioneer) speakers need power to sound right- and no head units (no matter what they say) are able to send adequate power to the speakers. Good luck!

You may want to consider the Kappa component series 5.25 which is model 50.3cs. The 52.3i are the coaxial model. The component series has a separate tweeter and mid/woofer. Your door can accept the component series. I just installed a pair in my 88 cab. For the tweeter you can utilize the stock "interface" plastic piece with the threads so that you can still use the threaded grill for a stock look. For the mid/woofer you would have to use the infinity cover ring. The body of the speaker is a bit bulky but by rotating the body to the "best fit" will seat the speaker nicely. The grill is silverish so a quick black paint job is needed if for matching the tweeter grill for a stock look. The woofer ring is already black.
Since I have a cab, I do not use rear deck but I did install the 4 inch kappas in my rear quarters. They do not help much as far as great sound but they do fill in the back area which I like. Of course there will be no low end since the 5.25 in the front are wimpy at best. I picked up an infinity basslink for the cockpit. I rigged it up so that I can remove it should my kids be in the rear seat. The setup is not the best but for my budget and the amount of time I drive the car....It'll do. For your price reference, I paid 144 for the 50.3cs, 69 for the 4 inch, and 222 for the baselink. Whichever speaker you choose, it will definitely sound better than the stock ones ![]()

Carnut is correct. You really need to put an amplifier in the system to get it to sound nice. I put mine under the pax seat and it works great.

I'll second (or third or fourth) the need for power to drive these speakers. I'm using a 25 watt per channel Blaupunkt Miami Beach with no external amp and it sounds good but not great. I need to add an amp one of these days.

Hey Falcon,
Could you go over your comments about the tweeter grill. 'For the tweeter you can utilize the stock "interface" plastic piece with the threads so that you can still use the threaded grill for a stock look. For the mid/woofer you would have to use the infinity cover ring. ' I have already thought about painting the Infinity grill black to match the interior. I am now considering components in the front with woofers only in the rear deck - plus an amp of course. I am curious about the tweeter location since my stock system had only the 5.25 in the door with no remote tweeter mounting location. I believe that Porsche also made an upgraded sound system with factory seperate tweeters.

I have 6 1/2 MB Quarts that sound wonderful, and fit under the stock grills.

6 1/2 Focal seperates, MPX 4X75 amp, 2 8in subs. 116 db and crystal clear with roof open at 75 mph w/street-track exhaust. Ear damage if I am not careful.

ah Ronin, I have a 4X75 RMS amp too, although it's a kenwood, and I have my rears bridged to a single 8 inch sub. Still fun though.

Yargk...I also bridged amp to subs in mono. I don't feel need for rear deck speakers. Reak deck is only good for "fill" anyway. Tweeters are high on door panel. Can't figure out how to raise stage above dash. A small center channel above rear view mirror would not give me the db I need. Any ideas??? I installed wedges under door woffer that helped imaging.

Randy,
From your above question: "I am curious about the tweeter location since my stock system had only the 5.25 in the door with no remote tweeter mounting location. I believe that Porsche also made an upgraded sound system with factory seperate tweeters" My error, I assumed all 87-89 had the separate holes for mounting a tweeter and a woofer. Possibly the hole in the sheetmetal is there except its covered by material. I found out that the tweeter opening doubles as the opening to access the nut to mechanically crank the window mechanism should there be a power-to-the-window problem, that is why the threaded speaker grill. I am curious to see where you would crank your window if your power wasn't available, unless you do not have power windows. Anyway, your choice in the coax would be the only way to go. The Kappas allow you to swivel the tweeter which is a must. see your manual. If more highs are needed then you'll have to add a separate tweeter. Placement is important and hiding the wires will be the hard part. Not sure if your woofer in your back deck will give you enough bass even with an amp. You may want to add a SUBwoofer. If you do, make sure you have a 5 channel amp or a separate amp, in addition to your 4 channel amp, to drive the SUB.

I put tweets in at either side at the bottom edge of the dash in wedges that pointed them more or less at the seatbacks. I've never knee'd them yet and the position works well.
My '79 was a bit of a squeeze getting 5" woofs into the doors, I later switched to some beefy 4" mids using thick plate aluminum for mounting and added subs. |
