Fitting an early steering wheel on a later car

I'm backdating my '86 and I want to see if I can fit the earlier '73-style 400mm steering wheel (shown) on the later '86 Carrera shaft. Does anyone know if this can be done or not? Thx.

Has anybody done this? I've since found out that the earlier wheel lacks the built-in hub of the Carrera wheel, so I wonder if a Momo hub adapter could be used.

Years ago I went the other way and put an SC wheel on my '71. I did as you described-cut the original mounting boss off and drilled the momo pattern into the SC wheel.

I imagine you could go the other way, but it'll be some work. I think you'll lose some leg room with the larger diameter wheel? And I think the momo hub is longer than what's on the original wheel so it will sit further off your dash than stock.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I'm getting close to a decision on what to do about my steering wheel. I still want to mount a 380mm (RS or 914-6) or 400mm (regular 911) LWB wheel, but I'm not sure how to go about creating the correct depth spacing.

I have definitely confirmed that the splined shaft is the same as the pre-'74 cars, as I have temporarily mounted an early steering wheel in my car, but the rim of the wheel almost touches the dash edge above the gauges. I need about 1"-1.5" spacer of some kind to make it work.

Anyone have any ideas?

Dave, I'm working on something for that - would be perfect for you. It will allow you to run the OEM horn button/butterfly as well.

Getting the engineering drawings done at the moment - it will be a few weeks yet before I have product in hand.

The hubs are different, you can take an early and late and cut-weld the two together, that's what was done on my hub for an early to 930s wheel.

Ask porscheheaven or 20th street if they can get you a used early hub cheap.

Keith, any update on the hub adapter? Will it allow to use your 380 mm RS Steering Wheel on 74+ cars? Thanks, Markus

Markus, the hub is being delayed a little bit by the rollout of our '73 RSR Brake Calipers, which are in the eleventh hour at the moment.

The hub is designed for exactly that - the mounting of the 380mmRS (and factory original 400mm wheels to the '74-'89 cars.

It's coming, and it will blow away any cut/weld solution!

Cliff has it right... with a little money, some welding or machining anything is possible. Once you remove the outer covering to the steering hub you'll see that it's a pretty basic part. The top part of the hub is matched to the steering wheel, the bottom of the hub is matched to the steering shaft spline. Like Cliff say's, "find an early hub". Then it will be obvious and simple what you have to do.

Steering Hub Pix...

I thought my above explanation might have left something to be desired and remembered that I had a good picture that might clear up what has to be done. Note that the upper connecting flange for the steering wheel has been removed to adapt to my new wheel.
