Pacific Blue Metallic L31G

Hello everyone, I had this posting in the paint forum but have not recieved any responses.

I'm in the process of painting my 82 911SC targa and most of the automobile painters that I've come across have no experience spraying Glasurit. Most are experienced with dupont chromabase and PPG. How do these manufacturers compare to Glasurit. Also, I've heard that even the same paint code will look different.

To make matters worse, the San Francisco Bay Area is prohibiting autoshops from using solvent based paints so now they must all be water based. What type of paint quality would i expect from this change?

If anyone has a Pacific Blue Metallic paint job, please post pictures and paint manufacturer? Also, if you guys have any good SF Bay area body shop recommendations I'd like to hear your feedback.

Thanks,
Ruben

I'll take a stab at this...I've sprayed sikkens, dupont, ppg, glasurit, and more cheap no name paints then you can shake a stick at. and I like PPG and Glasurit the best. as far as color is concerned, they're all slightly different and you wont get an exact match unless you have a panel of your car put under a spectrometer. that said, if your doing a complete respray this isn't a big deal and you'd more then likely never notice the slight tint difference in your paint.
they all spray pretty much the same, and any competent painter will be able to shoot any of them well, the difference is in how their mixed. when mixed properly they all spray similar, but when someone screws up the mix,(been there, done that) thats when the results are disastorous. as far as the water based stuff, i think thats across the board now but I'm not sure. I left cali a year ago and haven't looked back. I know its hard to tell quality from pics, but this is PPG global.

pacific blue

Mine's getting a little thin on top (like it's owner) and on the engine lid.

Great color.

Someone was telling me recently that blue is the worst resale color for cars. (Someone did a study, I guess). Grey was the best. I still like blue but it has to be the right blue.

Really?? When I was searching for mine, I wanted a real color (not white, black, silver) but not guards red. Basically, for a Carrera, there's not much left other than blue.

The color is exactly the color I wanted when I was looking for a 911. I just happened to fall into this one and it was Pazific Blau. I fugured it must be a sign so I bought it.

The only color car I absolutely refused to even look at was red.

I recently had my completely restored '82SC Targa painted Pacific Blue. The painter uses Standox paint. Here's a recent picture taken (link to more pics at the bottom):

Guys, thanks for all your responses. The paint job looks better in the pictures but this is how it currently looks. It seems that its a bit darker than the pacific blue metallic.

Those two Targas are not even remotely close to Pacific Blue Metallic. That's not to say that they look bad, (it's extremely subjective), just that they are not the factory color or even close. The reason that I did not consider having my car painted for the rock chips and scratches was that I would have absolutely required that the new finish matched the original color 100%. It would have mandated Glasurit, (the PPG and other domestic examples I've seen were off by a mile), and a very skilled practitioner applying it.

It's a color that photographs differently according to light, actually it looks different in person depending as well. The clearest representation is the middle picture of my rear fender flair of the color in sunlight.

Speeder, I agree. I will have to go with glasurit in order to get the factory color.

Bottom one looks like Petrol Blue (on my screen), which is blue with a green scoop in it. Lovely colour.

No clue what colour my new '80 SC is, not that bothered either as the paint is shagged, but it looks very like Pacific. When it comes off the ship I'll check the code.

Here is Pacific Blue Metallic on my '82 928. Original paint was on the car when I bought it in 1998 and had a full repaint in Glasurit in 2006. The color changes from blue to grey depending on the light conditions and therefore it is difficult to get the same color in photographs to how it looks in the flesh.
