How-To: Dash Speaker upgrade (well.. what I did)
Hi,
I just upgraded the dash speaker in a 1970 911T (actually I am in the process of redo-ing the whole front electrics - last guy did his wiring a la hatchet! I wanted period looking radio - but modern functionality - but couldn't justify a Becker Mexico. So I chose a RetroSound - Model One. And when researching speaker options for the dash... not alot to directly replace standard.. and I wanted respectable sound. So.. I made the following - easy to do without heavy tooling! I cut a piece of 150x220 alu thread plate (about 2mm thick or so). Then cut out two 95mm diameter holes with a jigsaw with 105mm centres (I tried a hole saw for plasterboard - not a good idea!) and filed them clean enough. Then I bent the each of the sides (about 20mm) by clamping between pieces of wood and gently hammering until at 90 degrees. Then I drilled the mounting holes that suited the speakers (here Focal Polyglass 100CVX - plenty of room for the depth - just awkward fitting. Thankfully I have no ventilation unit at the moment because of rewiring the front. To mount the speakers in the car, the between centres for the mount holes in the dash are: 200mm x 80mm Result: ![]() ![]() Just need to trim those bolts I think. ![]() Ciao, brd |

Wipers no problem. I'm fitting the ventilation system next week as part of the re-wiring project. I expecting (hoping!) that it will be fine. I'll keep you posted
![]() (Being in a 911T means there are no dash vents to the right of the clock to have to deal with of course...) brd. |

Banned but not out, yet..

Nice work. Looks more substantial than what I bought on Evil Bay which does the same but still sounds good:

Thanks. Yeah... I saw that one too and was wondering what the build quality was like.
I decided to make my own to be sure as I wanted a sturdy enough mount for the speakers to help with the bass. The speakers themselves are also quite heavy and I wanted to not have mount issues either due to the Bilstein sport suspension. brd. |

UPDATE: Rewiring completed of the front half of the car with everything installed - so no interference with using these speakers and any other components (previous question)
(Just don't want to have to go in and change them now! ![]() |
