Its been a while since I've studied the HVAC systems in the 911, so I'm guessing this is a pretty basic question....
My heat no longer works -- the heat that comes on when you lift the two orange levers between the seats (stock '87 911 coupe). Does this mean a blower motor is gone, and if so, is it the one that lives in the 'smuggler's box' in the front compartment? If that's it, do I need Pelican part #911-571-320-32-M6? Anything special about replacing this motor? Thanks in advance.

my '86 carrera with stock heat has three other heater blower motors, one in the engine compartment (on the left hand side at the top of the black metal assembly above the intake manifold) and one in each footwell. I'd be surprised if the one you referenced in your email is the dead one and would start by confirming that the other 3 motors are operational. You may want to also search the archives a bit as there are some fuses/relays in the engine compartment that need to be checked too.

You're right about "systems"... no HVAC, the H is one system, the V is another and the AC is another.
The heater blower(s) on your car is in the rear, top left of the engine as you look from the rear. There are also small footwell blowers in each of the front kickpanels. Turn the key all the way on, don't start it. Lift the 2 red (orange) knobs and see if you hear the heater blower in the rear and the kickpanels. Lifting the knobs turns them on. Your heater should still work to some extent just from the force of the engine cooling fan (I think, it does on my SC), actually at highway speed you don't need the heater blower. The thing in the smuggler's box is the evaporator for the AC system. (The condensers are on underside of the engine lid grille and under the car behind the front bumper). if you lift the levers near the E-brake, you should automatically get heat while the car is moving.
If you're not getting heat after lifting the levers, I would check the heater boxes and cables to see if they are operating correctly. IIRC, the "vent holes" on the box will be open if the levers are off, and vice versa if the levers are on.
