To Flash or not?
Hi guys, here's a question for you; when I see another Porsche driver (qualification...other non-SUV Porsche driver), I flash my high beams and usually give a wave with a smile.
However driving around Boulder Colorado, I'm only getting around one in five return waves, and one in ten flashes. I feel like there's a missing sense of community here... What do you guys do? Cheers, - CraigD P.S. I also do the double/triple flash when I know people are driving into a speed trap, this is a single flash to say "Hey! You get it!"

I suspect though that the reason they dont flash/wave is that many of the drivers of the "newer cars" have no clue about the Porsche heritage, etc. Dare I say.."Gold Chain Crowd" and Doctors wives ? ![]() |

I rarely meet other Porsche's where I live, but I always flash
![]() Most Boxsters and 996/997's don't seem to notice. But what do I care... The classic ones always smiles and waves ![]() |

I get all my waves from air cooled and older as well as classics from other makes. 996/997 SUV´s Caymans just don´t care. They have the money but not the soul

Flashing to warn of speed traps is an obstruction of justice and in some places can get you the flasher a ticket or even sent to jail.
So be careful when and where you flash that. ![]() |

buzz kill......
I flash and wave too. But I agree about the newer Porsche's, SUV's dont count as Porsche's, They seem to be driving a Porsche cause its nice and expensive. They seem to be connected at the wallet, not the heart.

The story is that a new gang initiation ritual has become prevalent in our city. The hoodlums pile in a car, at night, and drive the highways and byways with their lights off. The first person who 'flashes' them with their lights (in the time-honored gesture of 'hey, idiot, your lights are off!') becomes their prey. The gangbangers then pursue the samaritan and the initiate must gun him or her down without mercy. Sounds like a myth, right? But do you suppose there is a kernel of truth to the rumor; that perhaps somewhere at sometime some thugs did, in fact, use this modus operandi? |

Yes our early air cooled 911's may not be monetarily valuable but they got soul and emotional value something you can't buy

About 40 years ago I moved from the land of ice and snow to Santa Monica, California. Sports car folks in central Michigan used to wave or flash each other. That just didn't work in L.A. There were so many more folks in L. A. switched on to the cool imports that even though you were part of the club, the club was just so omnipresent that your hand or your flasher would wear out rather quickly. Actually, the club wan't exclusive like back in the land of ice and snow. Having had the L. A. experience, I niether wave nor flash unless the other does first and, unless its vintage, I understand that it would likely be wasted. So, why not be friendly, but don't expect a reply unless the club is really exclusive, and like someone said, that club is attatched to the heart.

Craig,
One in five people having enough soul (to wave back) in the "people's republic" of Boulder is not bad odds.

Now that I think about it, the flash backs have been almost exclusively air cooled. I've only had one older gent in a 997 flash back, and my guess is that isn't his first or only Porsche.
![]() As far as flash warning of speed traps, I'll always do it to warn my fellow citizens. I think speed traps in areas where it's completely unwarranted, just for revenue, are an abstraction of justice. ![]() I will keep the flash alive in my town for sure. ![]()

In the very old days, guys with VW beetles would flash headlights. Miata guys would wave, or make the headlights flip up/down. In the really old days people would sometimes even pull over to talk.
I would agree that nowadays if you flash, people will think that you are alerting them to something they need to slow down for. I flash a lot for that. When I would drive my 928, I always thought that 911s wouldn't flash because I didn't have a 911. Now I realize that people just don't like me. ![]() That doesn't stop me if I feel like flashing or waving. ![]() ![]() |

I wave to other air-cooled Porsche drivers and generally get a wave in return. I sometimes wave to other cool older cars, may or may not get one in return.
I will return a wave from a newer Porsche / other car but wont initiate. I don't flash my lights.
