To Wave or Not to Wave?

Summer is almost here in the New England so the Porsche's are waking from their winter sleep.

Yesterday morning I passed an older 911 yesterday gave him a s'up (thumb hooked under the top of the steering wheel) and got nothing back. That afternoon I passed a Boxster who gave me the wave, not sure I should respond I pretended I was on my cell. What is the proper etiquette?

I ride motorcycles and "the wave" is much more common on bikes. Much like your "aircooled vs. boxter" situation it's a very diverse society. Harley guys seem to like to wave more than the rest; it's almost required. Sportbike guys rarely wave (probably because they're using both hands to ride). My personal policy is that I rarely wave but always try to return the wave regardless of who's giving it and what they're riding or driving. Who knows, the boxster dude might have a nice longhood in his garage and he was just appreciating your ride. Don't be a hater.............wave back!

I agree, i started driving my red 911 a daily driver now and here in california we have a lot of Porsches and rarely someone waves back to me. So sometimes i don't even bother. I guess since they have a newer porsche than mine 77' they think they should not wave. It's really disappointing. Last night i was on the freeway, there were guys in a non Porsche that were giving me a thumbs up. So now i'm really confused.

Alot of the "newer" Porsches are leased vehicles and some of the drivers are not true "Porsche" enthusiasts....hence the no wave or acknowledgement due to not knowing...I always wave or flash my lights at other Porsche drivers....if they dont do the same, maybe they'll catch on?

Back in the eighties with my first BMW, that's all we Bimmer drivers did..and today, again with all the leases and all shapes and sizes and backgrounds able to get into a Bimmer...they're not true Bimmer enthusiasts either...kind of disappointing if you ask me...

I've had sportbikes as well and we always waved to one another in passing...

Thumbs up

All air-cooled Porsche get a wave back from my 911

Agreed, some of the drivers of newer 911's don't know about the awesomeness of our air-cooled brother-hood

I used to wave to all air-cooled 911's, but when maybe 10% wave back I kind of just stopped initiating the wave and go on my way.....

I flashed a 997 on the way into work last summer. He flipped me the bird.
I don't flash water cooled cars anymore.

All air-cooled get a flash/wave. Any other sports car gets a wave if there is eye contact. Yes, even Corvettes and Miatas.

Yep, 997's are not ones to wave to. Nor 996's. Neither a few 993's.

In fact, the wave is dead.

Sometimes I wave,

but every once in a while after I've just seen a couple of JEEP people nearly have coronaries waving at each other, I wonder if the waving thing is really GHEY.

Out here its like 50/50 I use the double beep of the horn as there's no mistaking the sound of a Porsche horn. Most return but the boxter convertibles won't even acknowledge you. Older 911's both of us do a "u" turn at the same time to stop and get info for about 3-5 minutes. The double beep beep is the most widely used out here.

I always wave to 911's of any variety, and usually get a wave back. I'll sometimes wave to Boxsters just because they look like water cooled 911's from the front -- but they almost never wave back.

That old thread regarding "the wave" is great - so much so that I summarized it a few years back when I first saw it.

IMHO, the best one is from an SWB owner (John Kramer):
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a representative of the '64-68 community I would like to add:

1) SWB's are so rare by the time you see one from the front and can make out the longer horn grills, it's either too late to wave, or the car has rusted away;

2) By the time you see one from the side, and notice the tiny gap between the torsion tube cover and the wheel arch, it's too late to wave, or rust has begun to form;

3) By the time you see one from the back, and see the angled "911" script in gold, or the split engine lid grille, it's too late to wave, and the car is gone in a haze of Weber smoke.

Therefore, if you find yourself in a situation where SWB's are likely to be encountered, which is likely to be (a) a concours or the parade; or (b) outside of a rust removal/restoration shop, please do the following.

a) Boxster and 996/7 owners, please put your beer in the cupholder and salute;

b) 930 owners, please stop pointing at the boost gauge and wave;

c) 2.7 owners, please stop pointing at the oil temperature gauge and wave;and

d) 356 owners, please take your finger off the page of the NLA reproduction parts catalog, and wave to those whose parts are TRULY NLA!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And from "larry47us":
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1- 356's get a Wave and Salute

2- ’67-‘73 911's get Two Thumbs Up

3- '74-‘77 911's get a Wave of Respect or Sympathy (your choice)

4- '78-‘83 911’s get the secret SCWDP Handshake

5- ’84-‘98 911's get an Enthusiastic Wave

6- 914's get a Knowing Smile and a Nod

7- 924, 928, 944, 968 get Eye Contact and a Nod

8- Boxsters get a wave only if they wave first

9- '99-‘05 911's - see Boxster

10- Cayenne owners get a raised eyebrow

11- "Special" Porsches (anything not covered previously),
use your best judgment

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
