As I was pulling into the neighborhood after a spirited hour and a half drive this afternoon I looked in the mirror and saw my heat shield that normally is protecting the catalytic converter laying in the middle of the street. Thank god I didn't lose it while I was driving on the back roads!
Since I don't have access to a welding unit, is there any other way to reattach or should I just take it somewhere next week and have them reweld? Also, is it OK to drive with out it until I get it reattached? I'd like to take advantage of the weather tomorrow and hit the roads again but I won't if there is the chance of doing any damage to anything. Thanks for the help. Doug '81 SC Coupe |

The sole purpose of the heat shield is to keep you from burning up your car if you drive hard and then park it in a field of tall, dry grass, which the hot cat could ignite. Other than that, it serves no purpose. If you don't park in fields of dry grass, leave it off.

The formed-metal cat heat shield is a bolt-on, and is *not*
welded to anything. Several bolts, captive nuts, and a bracket on the muffler/cat joint, secure the heat shield. Aside from the burning grass issue, the heat shield does protect the rear tire (somewhat) from the intense heat radiated by the cat. Replacing the cat with a test pipe reduces the heat load dramatically on that side, FWIW.

Thanks for the responses.
I think maybe the PO put an aftermarket Cat on the car because I can clearly see where there were 6 spot welds (1 in each corner and 2 in the middle). I looked in the parts manual and at the Bentley book and the pictures in those don't match what was on my car. I am not going to worry about it now since the weather isn't great today and I'm not sure when I'll be able to drive her again. Happy motoring! Doug '81 SC Coupe |
