A new 911 group, for only 12,962 members...

Sure, there's the SCWDP, the R Gruppe, Gruppe B -- and even the MFIWDP and the 'Evil' Gruppe. Lots of overlap. Lots of different attitudes. A group for just about everyone.

So why not throw in one more?

Of all the Porsche 911's made, there was only one four-door model. Still a coupe, it has a driver's door, a passenger door, a gas flap, and -- you're with me here, right? -- an oil flap door. The 1972 911 is one-of-a-kind, that way (except, well, maybe the 959, and the 911R, and a few others, but let's not get too technical).

Here's a quickly-thrown-together FAQ for the group I'm talking about.

Q. Why have a group devoted to the 1972 911? A. Why not? There ought to be a group for every model year from 1965 to 2004.

Q. Is the 1972 911 the greatest of all 911's? A. Well, no. Of course not. But it's got some unique features that do make it interesting.

Q. What does this group do? A. Good question. No one really knows, yet. For starters, it's going to try and put together a registry of 1972 911 owners.

Q. What would qualify me to join this group? A. You need to own a 1972 911.

Q. What other requirements? A. None. It can be completely original, completely modified, a complete piece of junk, or anything in between. It just has to be a 1972 911.

Q. Sounds great. What's the name of the group. A. Vierte Tür Klub, which is German (we hope) for 'Fourth Door Club.' For short, call it VTK.

Q. A group needs a website. Does VTK have one? A. Absolutely. See it at http://www.911vtk.com/ .

Q. Are there any membership dues or obligations? A. None. If you've got a 1972 911, you're in -- and you've even already got your membership number.

Q. All right. What's my membership number? A. It's the last six digits of your VIN. In my case, my VIN is 9112100777, so my membership number is "100777."

Q. Have you got a logo and a sticker? A. Yup. Let's see if this works:

or

Well, at least a logo. I'm sure stickers will be available in the future.

Q. Who's idea was this, anyway? A. Hayden, the technical director of Wevo (you know them for their shifters, transaxle and other enhancements) thought it up. I got involved because I have a 1972 911 too, and therefore he can't kick me out.

Q. Did Janet Jackson flash a breast at the Superbowl on purpose? A. I don't know. I think you've got the wrong FAQ.

So, there you have it. This group will probably have the least amount of attitude of any of the groups -- although by that I don't mean to imply that the other groups have attitude (heck, I'm a member of some of 'em) But simply put, all the other groups have covered all the important territories already, anyway.

But if you've got a 1972 911, this is one group you can't get kicked out of -- even if you belong to all of the others.

sounds like a cool group, too bad i dont apply though, car is 74. did want to let you know that the spelling of the club name isnt wrong, just that the word four, vierte, would not be spelled that way in the context you have it. it would be Viertel Tur Klub. it is also interesting to note that in the germanic language the use of the umlaut, the two dots you placed over the u is slowly being phased out. long winded, sorry, im bored.

I guess mine is "anything in between."

Finally, a club that will have me as a member!

Just spent the last six hours putting the interior back in my car. I figure if the motor is going to be finished in a week or so, I might as well be able to drive it!

Great, another tribe to do battle with. OK, let's see, has (or had) MFI...check. Long hood...check. Oil tank forward and access flap on outside...hmmm...dubious weight distribution advantage...check. Increased turbulence / drag due to external oil tank flap...YES! That's it. Muhahaha...Oh wait, what if they mention the 73s bumperettes? Drat!

Great idea, too bad I have a '74. Maybe we can start a "mid-years" gruppe!

Any self-respecting club needs some official clothing .... keeping with the 1972 theme, I'll nominate this:

haha, believe it or not, I just found this old magazine yesterday Jim. My elderly aunt is cleaning stuff out of her condo ..... I'm going thru tons of 8mm films and 35mm slides ..... they were big fans of the CanAm in the 60's - 70's and I know there's got to be racing footage in there somewhere!!

You're crazy But aren't we all somehow :P

Regarding spelling:

Vierte=Fourth
Vier=Four

The "Umlaut" dots over the U in Tür is correct. Tür=Door.

How about this name: "Vier Türer Gemainschaft" ? Sounds more complicated and thus important Only I can't remember the english word for Gemeinschaft right now sorry

I am new to this board. Just bought 2384 (aubergine, sporto, 4-door).
I understand RGruppe and GruppeB but not "WPD". Assume MFI is mechanical fuel injection and SC is "SC". Please translate WPD for me.

WDP - World Domination Plan.

When used with MFI, the P isn't required. We are beyond planning...MFIWD is a fact of life.

I had a 72... does that qualify as an "associate" member?

Can I put a 72 oil tank in my backdated 85 and qualify?

Souk, are you and your fellow Gruppe Bees planning an assault on those "coveted" 72 oil tank flaps so you can graft them onto your Frankenbastards?

Holy Shillelagh Batman!
An exclusive club that will even take me!!

Sniff.. I feels so nice to be respectable.

An oil-filler door? And here all along I thought my car was unique cause it had two gas tanks. Sucker uses enough to need two.
