3.oL build thankyou's

This is a special thankyou to all of you that helped me build this 3.0L engine for my 72 911 cpe.

I want to thank Pelican ( for the help on the forum and parts), John Dougherty for an awesome cam grind (GT2-102), the west coast crank grinder ( I''m sorry I forgot his name, but was recommended by J&B Racing) and then Mike and Jim at J&B Racing.

My idea was to build a bullet proof 3.0L that would get me below 10:1 power/weight in my 2200 lb car. This engine would hopefully never need anything except an oil change and valve adjust.

This is what I got. I started with an 81 3.0L case. J&E 9.5:1 pistons and cylinders with ARP rod bolts. Stock heads with the second sparkplug hole drilled for later. John Dougherty's GT2-102 cam. My 40mm Webers and my rebuilt 2.7 distributor and European headers into Ben's M&K 2 in and 2 out early generation muffler.

Mike (J&B Racing) and I ran the engine for over 30 pulls on their engine dyno. We established a baseline and then hooked up the twinplugs with their twinplug distributor and MSD ignition. We also found two small oil leaks, easily fixed on the dyno rather than in the car.

After tuning the Webers (40mm with 36mm venturis), 160 mains, 175 air and 60 idle jet we were making 248 hp flat between 6200-6800 rpm. The torque was over 200 ft lbs from 3500 - 6200 rpm and peaked at 230 lbs around 5000 rpm.

We then worked back to my street/track combination. The jetting stayed the same even with my K&N air filters installed. We went back to my stock distributor with points and the timing set to 36 deg max through Clewett wires. We put Ben's little tail pipe baffle back in and made 233 hp between 6100-6500 rpm. The torque was 214 lbs at 3800 rpm and peaked at 218 lbs @4800 rpm, not dropping below 200 lbs until 6200 rpm and still 170 lbs at 7000 rpm while still making 227 hp at 7000 rpm.

Sooo, Mike and Jim at J & B Racing where awesome. They are 35 mins away so I was a constant pest asking questions and using their shop capabilities and expertise.

I still have to finish installing one aluminum trailing arm and then the engine/tranny. I am swapping my Fuch rims for Superlite 15X7 rims and will have Sid Collins of Troysport align and corner balance it to finish everything off.

Thanks to everyone it has been an great learning experience.

I forgot to mention a thankyou to Wayne for his great book on rebuilding engines. Since my only other attempt was a 327 chevy Wayne's book was invaluable. He doesn't miss a trick and if you follow it will produce an outstanding result. Thanks Wayne..
