Battery advice
My 84 carrera has some kind of current drain. Then recharging the battery leads to boiled batteries and sulfate spills.
We have been able to track down the source of the current drain. Should I install a battery shut off or purchase a smart charger? M

And, how old is the battery? Alternator output voltage? Should not exceed 14.5V. Specific gravity measurements?

I use a Optima Marine/Yellow top. Goes flat and charges back up. Sounds like you may have an issue besides the drain. I would check the battery terminals with a digital gauge.
12.5 at rest 12.8-13.0 at idle 13.0-14.0 at 2500 rpms.....anything more and you have a regulator issue. AFTER fixing that....put the gauge back on and pull fuses one at a time. Isolate your drain, then find it and fix it.....

It sounds like you fixed the drain. If you haven't then that is step one.
Take the battery out and neutralize the area where the acid spilled over. Try charging the battery it out of the car. If it still boils you may have a bad battery (most FLAPS will check it for free) or a bad charger. I love my Optima Red Top. No worries with acid spills and it doesn't have to be vented like a regular battery should be.
