replacing carrera script on lid

Leave it off as the factory had an emblem delete for the Carrera as shown below.

Black double-stick, the kind with the high-density foam or rubber-like layer between the adhesive layers.

I did a simple tracing of the script onto paper and then onto the tape release liner. I then cut it out with a fresh x-acto blade. That way, I could be sure I "undersized" the adhesive slightly so it didn't protrude & collect dirt. This also saved me from damaging the script, which I would have if I trimmed the adhesive after applying it to the back of the script. I also left some small gaps in the adhesive to improve water drainage after washing the car, and to ease removal next time.

I mention "removal next time" on purpose, because I've put the script on & off a few times to detail the deck lid (my car is black/black). I can certainly see why people leave it off.

I really don't want to put holes in the decklid, but securing it with threaded fasteners would be extremely helpful. I've got some very small, very high-strength magnets that I'm going to experiment with to see if that is a potential solution. (Yeah, I know with magnets, people could steal it, but they can if it is secured with adhesive, too.)

Purchase a new one from our host it already has the proper adhesive on it and will look good with the new paint. Put the other on your tool box.

The new Carrera script is actually from the 993 I believe. It is not the same size as the original 911 Carrera script. I would save the old one. I don't have any glue recommendations. Elmer's brand has some household glue that is made of silicone. That should work, I think.

You can get either the new, smaller 993 size, or the original 84-89 size. Both are still available.

I recently bought a new factory 84-89 one. It was $16.

When I had my new (old) decklid painted, I left the script on thinking that I'd just go get a new one. They were instructed to not remount it. When I got the lid back, they handed me the old one but with some kind of thin tape to mount it.

How it works is that you peel off one side of the release tape revealing the sticky stuff underneath. Place your nice clean script on the tape, ensuring the entire script is on some of the tape. Press firmly. Now peel the tape off. The adhesive will remain on your script and allow you to affix to your car. That's it. No tracing, cutting, spreading of glue or other mucking about is required. Just place the tape, press it on, remove the backing and mount the script. Easy. Takes all of about eight seconds.

Body shops have to remove and re-affix logos and insignia all the time. I would expect that you could pick this type of material up at any body shop supply place. Or if you talked nice to your friendly local body guy, he might just give you a strip to do it.

The problem with that-no trimming-means you have exposed sticky surface on the top side.

The back of the emblem actually has a groove in which the double sided tape sits.

That is so it can still stick to the decklid, but sit "flush" without seeing any of the tape.

To duplicate that, you'd either need a very narrow and flexible strip of double sided tape (narrow enough to fit in that tiny groove), or you'd have to spend some time with a razor trimming it to fit.

I thought about doing that, but a roll of 3M double sided tape was $7. The whole badge was $16 (bought it at local parts shop). Wasn't worth my time to try to save $9.

I never thought of the edge of the adhesive being exposed. And I I'm not going to spend all that time trimming double sided tape. I guess it's good that I just went and bought another script. The old one will look good on the tool box...
