Another green wire question

ok, another green wire question;
I have a 79 euro 911sc and recently bought the distributor green wire from our host. The unit is basically a very short wire with a connector on the end of it. I went to install it today and noticed that my car has a very long wire coming off the distributor that goes directly into the wiring harness with no connector that i can see. Has anyone run across this before? Maybe I got the wrong wire?

Same Problem

I purchased the same one from our host and it was too short and needed to be fabricated into the wiring harness.

I returned and purchased the longer one from another source... sorry I do not have the part # but the longer one replaces the wire in the CDI connector, at least it did on my 930.

Best of luck.

Bryan

you cut the long wire and add the proper end that relates to the short wire plug. same plug and inside connectors as the warm up regulator, etc. bosch part # 1 287 013 003. includes 2 crimp on wire ends, one plastic snap on plug and one rubber boot. be sure not to mix up the signal wire with the ground braid when you make up the plug. it will run, but not right.

The 928 green wire is long enough to go from the dizzy to the CDI, that's what I used.

thanx for all the replies. I understand what needs to be done. I could buy the green wire from the 928, but it is nearly twice the price and I am not sure that it is 100% compatible. sounds like the easiest thing to do is to just get the fuel plug connector that John recommends. any idea where to get this part, John?

As far as the polarity goes, on the plug on the dist body itself, is the signal wire on the left or right side when looking at the housing? I asked about this a while ago and couldn't find the answer?
thanks

i don't remember. use an ohmmeter to trace continuity between the outer ground braid and the terminals in the plugs to find out. (use the old green wire).

JW -

Your solution sounds great - thanks for the info and even the part number.

My question is, if more than the first six inches of my "green wire" is now brown, would you still recommend this solution? Or should I look into using the longer wire?

Thanks a lot for your help!

the wire curves into the distributor and that's where i breaks and the outer ground braid can contact the inner signal wire. if the cable is undamaged other than discolored, you should be fine.

I put off this green wire fix for 5 years, and tonight I finally did it. It was so easy and made such a big difference. I had a weird power loss around 5k rpm that had gotten worse over time, and this got rid of the issue.

Here are some details in case it helps somebody hesitant like me take the plunge.

Cut the wire (this is the hardest part!). Use a multimeter set on continuity to determine which pin connects to the Inner wire and which is the Outer wire. This tells you on your new, matching plug which is which, then you can use your tester to identify the pins on the other end of the new pigtail, which will mate up with the green wire you snipped. I labeled mine so I wouldn't screw it up.

You crimp on the ends of the new plug, then you just insert the wires based on which pin is supposed to be the Inner and Outer.

Now your car is setup to use the short pigtail. Thanks JW for a really easy solution to a problem I've been putting off for so long.

Literally, the hardest part was trying to plug it into the distributor at the end. The fan housing is really close, and it's a tight fit. I loosed the heater duct for a little more clearance, but it was still really hard to reach. This is where I spent most of my time, otherwise you could do the whole thing in 5-10 minutes. This isn't any harder than changing the oil.

Green wire

The green wire shield is the ground and plugs into the CDI master plug at position #3 (front right hand side of plug looking at top of plug). The green wire center conductor is the positive lead and plugs into position #6 (rear right hand side of plug looking at top of plug). Hope this helps.

That may be helpful for somebody. But the way I did it you snip the wire and add a connector so you never work on the CDI end of the cable.
