Welding O2 bunng on premuffler
I've got a euro premuffler I'd like to install on my 82 SC. I want to retain the O2 sensor.
Can I use an AC stock welder with a stainless electrode to add a stainless O2 bung? Also, is it possible to weld a second outlet on my muffler with an AC stick welder? If so, what electrode would work best for that thin sheet metal? Regards, Jerry |
it may be rough on the o2 bung with stainless stick electrode with spatter but its not impossible. As to the muffler that is easier I would suggest 3/32 6013 rod its low penotratation is perfect for sheet metal.

Thanks Ben,
Isn't the stock Porsche exhaust system a type of stainless steel? Shouldn't I be using a different alloy rod for the sheet metal? Thanks, Jerry |
Jerry,
If possible, take it to a professional and have it TIG welded. DO NOT weld it with 6013 electrode as it is a mild steel electrode and is not compatible with any type of stainless material. Thirty years teaching welding at a state college. |
Thanks donn6662. That's what I expected.
I have and AC stick welder that's great for sticking a couple of pieces of mild steel together, but I figured I would have problems with the exhaust sytem because of my limited skill set and the nature of an AC welder. |
I had a second stainless steel O2 bung welded into my SS cat-bypass so that I could check the AFR.
They guy who did the welding owns a race car fab shop. I dropped the bung and the pipe off, picked it up the next day. The guy wanted $10.00. I gave him $20.00 and told him lunch is on me. I got perfect stack o' dimes welding, done by a pro with a tig welder, and he got a nice $10.00 tip. |
