Welding O2 bunng on premuffler

I've got a euro premuffler I'd like to install on my 82 SC. I want to retain the O2 sensor.

Can I use an AC stock welder with a stainless electrode to add a stainless O2 bung?

Also, is it possible to weld a second outlet on my muffler with an AC stick welder? If so, what electrode would work best for that thin sheet metal?

it may be rough on the o2 bung with stainless stick electrode with spatter but its not impossible. As to the muffler that is easier I would suggest 3/32 6013 rod its low penotratation is perfect for sheet metal.

Thanks Ben,

Isn't the stock Porsche exhaust system a type of stainless steel? Shouldn't I be using a different alloy rod for the sheet metal?

Jerry,
If possible, take it to a professional and have it TIG welded. DO NOT weld it with 6013 electrode as it is a mild steel electrode and is not compatible with any type of stainless material.

Thirty years teaching welding at a state college.

Thanks donn6662. That's what I expected.

I have and AC stick welder that's great for sticking a couple of pieces of mild steel together, but I figured I would have problems with the exhaust sytem because of my limited skill set and the nature of an AC welder.

I had a second stainless steel O2 bung welded into my SS cat-bypass so that I could check the AFR.

They guy who did the welding owns a race car fab shop. I dropped the bung and the pipe off, picked it up the next day. The guy wanted $10.00. I gave him $20.00 and told him lunch is on me. I got perfect stack o' dimes welding, done by a pro with a tig welder, and he got a nice $10.00 tip.

same(teaching at state college) here and the stock mufflers are mild steel or ferretic stainless. It should be Tig welded no question but he asked about Stick welding and 6013 would be best in this none standard application. if he wants it to last the life of the car he is heading down the wrong path.
