Care To Diagnose These Glitches?

My beautiful '86 usually runs great, but every once in awhile, she throws me an unpleasant curve..maybe that's why I call her my "second wife."

I've had three incidents in the past two months. Twice she died while driving, moments after I started her from cold. Both times she started right up again.

Starting from cold, I regularly need to goose the gas to get her running. She'll then catch and run fine. She idles very regularly, even sitting in traffic, and hot starts are not a problem.

Today, after an uneventful ride to work, I parked her in an enclosed underground garage. Three hours later, I attempted to start her, and it took four tries to get her to catch. After that, she drove home without a hitch.

Fuel delivery problem? Open loop problem? The DME relay is 10 years old...I'll switch it out this weekend. Could it be starting to go?

Whatever the diagnosis, I'm planning to replace the fuel pump, as it's 12 years and 42K miles old and I just figure a new unit would be prudent.

Any other guesses? Thanks![

DME Relay.

No need to replace fuel pump. "if it aint broken don't fix it"

If you want to make certain of the pump, test it first via Bentley Guide.

Hose, clamps and cheap air guage can determine if it is failing.
