headrest speakers
Has anyone added speakers to the headrest(s), similar to the Miata?
My 82 SC does not have a separate headrest, so I imagine Id have to cut the seat and leather, which Im not too keen on. any ideas? thanks |

that doesn't sound like such a good idea...
maybe if you had some old seats that you were going to re-cover anyway, you could experiment.. there are other typical places for speakers posted on this forum. search speakers. interesting idea though..

I've wondered about doing that.
The headrest speakers on my Miata were great driving with the top down. They're pretty small so fidelity was less than fantastic, but it was v. nice to have them. If you do it, have a pro do the holes (I had a pro put tweeter holes in my doors) so they'll look like a pro did them. |

you might be surprised at how "low tech" the speaker location is in the Miata headrests...pretty much as if someone scraped out a hole and loosely placed a pair of cheap speakers inside the homemade void.
FWIW, I replaced the stock Miata speakers with a pair that had quite a bit more "oomph"...really made a difference. IMHO, I think it could be done very easily in a P-car's seats. The difficult part would be poking or punching the acoustic holes into the leather or vinyl so it appears aesthetically correct.

I don't believe I used those. I have been on the East Coast for the last 4 months, but I fly back home on Saturday. I'll give you a PM on what I got after I get home.
IIRC, I measured the old stock speakers then did an internet search. Wound up with either a 2-way or 3-way speaker made of better-quality materials and handling up to 200 watts per channel.

You could look for a set of these Recaros. They bolt right in and the sound is remarkably good unless you are a bass fiend.

Maybe you could fabricate a bracket of some sort that looked decent and fitted on the top back of the seat. You could put it on and take it off when you wanted and use pretty much any kind of speaker you wanted - except for something really big.
