Momo Prototipo or Monte Carlo?

Hi all,

Picking up my 1985 Carrera next week (first Porsche) and am trying to decide whether to fit a Prototipo or Monte Carlo wheel.

Prototipo: THE classic Porsche wheel, but might look too "vintage" for the '85 interior?

Monte Carlo: also a great looking wheel, and cheaper, might fit with the '85 interior better... but it's not a Prototipo.

Opinions and especially pics of either wheel in a Carrera 3.2 would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Dallas

I went with a silver Prototipo...

to brighten up my very "black" ('82 SC) interior. I love my pewter/black combo, but the interior is a little too dark. I love the old interiors with the aluminum bright work, too bad that went away by the time my SC was born.

If you have an interior other than black, I think a matte black wheel usually looks better. A Monte has more "80's" character, and really looks good in the later air cooled 911's.

If you decide on a Monte let me know, I have one for sale (shameless plug).

I've had both. Monte Carlo is a more comfortable wheel, with thicker contoured areas at 3:00 and 9:00. However, the Prototipo just looks right in the cabin of a 911. IMO, It comes down to form vs. function. In this case, I went with form.

Salve, Dallas!

Speaking of pics requests, please post some of your '85 Carrera! I'm sure you have a few on your hard drive that helped you make the long-distance purchase. Other details, like history, PPI, etc. are also nice to make a proper introduction ... also, there are quite a few steering wheel posts in the archives, with plenty of pics of Protos & Montes.

FWIW, I faced the same decision with my late-83 SC. I think if I had ended up with a 3.2 rather than my SC, then the Monte Carlo would have won out if periodicity were the deciding element. Honestly though, either is appropriate, so personal ergodynamics preference should be the key factor. I also find 350mm (like the Proto & Monte) just a tad small; both Porsche's turbo wheel and the Porshe Design Momo are 360mm, which may arguably be the preferred diameter for SC/3.2 era 911s driven with intent. Personally, I wish I could find a Momo wheel similar to those put in the 956 (but the appropriate diameter for a 911)--one that was 360mm, with 90-degree solid spokes and very little dish. Don't think such a Momo exists, but it would be like a 5C (which are plenty rare enough) with 90-degree spokes rather than the angled ones on a Prototipo. Here's a pic:

Nice! Like it more than J.J.'s already! Yeah, that Grand Prix White beauty deserves a proper steering wheel.

It's got the right road wheels. I say a prototipo is the way to go, as long it is 370mm. I think the 350mm is a tad small for me so when I am in the cockpit, the top half of the speedo is hard to see.

I put a Monte Carlo on my '86 Carrera. I'll post a pic later when I get home. It was ok for a little while, but within a year I put the stock wheel back on and couldn't believe how much better it was. If they made a 380mm Prototipo, I'd try it. I can't stand 350mm wheels.

Just put a silver centered Prototipo in my white/black 88. Also got the aluminum door pulls. Beautiful.

I just spent the day driving 400 miles chasing the SoCal Targa California rabble in my '88 with a black Prototipo. I think that wheel's perfect; just rotate the speedo a few degrees counter-clockwise.

350mm Momo

Or you could go the custom route.

Not as angular as a MonteCarlo. Not as swoopy as some others. Just a touch of polished aluminum.

(but, is long gone to a new owner)

I have an '85 and had bought a Prototipo, but sold it before installation. I realized that the 1985's have uniquely high seats. It was the first year of the new seating generation - Porsche lowered them back down in 1986. I really needed extra space underneath the wheel for my legs. I might have been able to get enough with one of the spacers that are available, but I ended up going the route of the MOD 08 that has a very deep dish:

I have been thinking about this for my 88, it is 370mm, feels nice, fits a 3.2 with a hub
