Okay, 88 Carrera ... with the heat levers and 3-position defrost rotary knob in between them. Intermittently, it seems, with the top on the car, I'm getting a whiff of that unmistakable 911 heater smell, and there is heat present at either the defrost outlet or the footwell outlets, depending on the position of the red slider on the climate controls. No fan is running, but you can smell it, the dashboard gets hot if the defrost vents are active, etc. Pulling up on the heater handles activates the fans and the car heats as it should. I'm guessing the flaps on the heat exchangers are open, or are coming open intermittantly? Where are they and how are they controlled/accessed?
My AC, recently converted to r-134a, is blowing ice cold and working fine, aside from a slight squealing from the fan, usually when the car is pointed downhill, but I noticed today that when the compressor engages, it's pretty loud, and tends to moan a little at certain rpm ranges. Can anyone tell me if this is somewhat normal for a stock 88 compressor or do I need to worry about whether they mixed enough oil in with the new refrigerant? A quick addendum ... the car did blow the #2 fuse with the fAC an on the high position on Friday. I can't see how that would be related to the compressor making noise, but ... replaced the fuse and it worked fine today. Vic 88 Carrera [This message has been edited by vjd3 (edited 06-24-2001).] |

Same problem for me. Here is the recent thread that includes some very helpful information:

The flaps are located under the car just infront of the forward flexible heat exchanger hoses. Activating the flap directs the air from being directed to the outside of the car to the heating ducts. The blower is always on so this may be your problem. It could be one is hung up. Do you notice it from one side or the other in the car?. It is doubtful they would both be stuck at the same time.

Just a little more to add - the flaps are normally spring loaded open and could therefore be siezed (a broken cable means an open vent and hence cold air). Also when checking the vents allow time for the servos to operate. Working on my own, I found that I could alter heater settings, go to back of car, get underneath, and watch vents open/close. As 89911 says check for siding - not likely to get both going together.
