87 Carrera Flywheel Sensors

I have an 87 Carrera 3.2 and think I need to replace the flywheel sensors (rpm and tdc). Pellican does not seem to carry these anymore, just the bracket to hold them. I read somewhere that BMW sensors are identical. Does anyone know what model BMW sensors these are or where I can get the OEM Porsche sensor parts? Thanks for any help.

When I replaced mine, I bought the Porsche 911 sensors because I didn't know any better way back when. My local friend Jay Auskalnis (same username here on Pelican) is the one who confirmed to our local group that the BMW sensors do indeed work.

When Jay bought them, he got them thru a friend of ours who owned & operated a parts business. Jay provided me with the original Bosch part number: 0 261 210 002 which appears to be for E24 (635 and 735) and E28 (535) and E30 M3 BMW models. See page 15 of this Bosch application manual

http://apps.bosch.com.au/products/saa/ignition_modules.pdf.

On Pelicanparts, this equates to the sensor for 535 cars from 1985-1988 and 533 cars from 1983-1984 which is BMW part number 12-14-1-708-619-M14. Type it in the search field above and it'll come up in the catalog

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/pel_search.cgi?please_wait=N&forumid=&threadid=&command=DWsearch&description=12-14-1-708-619-M14&x=6&y=7&FILTER_APOR=ON&FILTER_PORS=ON&FILTER_911E=ON&FILTER_911M=ON&FILTER_911L=ON&FILTER_996J=ON&FILTER_997M=ON&FILTER_986M=ON&FILTER_987M=ON&FILTER_987C=ON&FILTER_356M=ON&FILTER_9144=ON&FILTER_944M=ON&FILTER_928M=ON&FILTER_TECH=ON&FILTER_SUPP=ON&FILTER_ACCE=ON&FILTER_CARE=ON&FILTER_STUF=ON&FILTER_PERF=ON&FILTER_MISC=ON&FILTER_GADG=ON&FILTER_TOOL=ON

These sensors work perfectly (been going strong in Jay's car for going on three years now), the harness plugs are the same, and so there is no need to buy the Porsche part number!

Are the leads long enough? Cost for Porsche on these things are even outrageous and I need 2 because I dont want to put the engine together with the 22 year old stuff.
I dont know anything about BMW numbering system.
Explanation would be appreciated

Don't know the exact length, but I had no problem. You might be able to fiddle with the picture to estimate. I didn't know about KTL/Kevin's source of info, but I actually found someone else here on Pelican or Rennlist used them and posted info.

That's how I came upon deciding to use them as an alternative - I don't recall if the info I found provided a detailed explanation of the BMW numbering system.

I think I even remember being chastised a little about the marque when I posted results, but no one ever said they were functionally inferior.

Let me know if you want a better picture of the bad ones - in this pic they are just in camera, with a new one coiled on the box (both are Bosch). You can see the insulation flaking off like mad. The green labels were mine, and yes, I still managed to flip the buggers. (with no permanent damage other than a few grey hairs)

my understanding is 84-89, but just so I don't mislead, please search on BMW and Sensor. KTL's info is spot on.

I also re-researched and found that the bmw version is a ~0.5 in shorter, but I have no kinks/sharp bends in the leads.

Yes. Make sure you observe the proper installation gap as outlined in the Bentley manual.

Let's face it - these are made by Bosch for a Bosch DME. The DME of that particular BMW is very similar to the 3.2 DME. The analog input stages are identical.

So the sensors are the same sensor regardless whether Porsche or another company re-sells them. Luckily the plugs are the same, too and the cable length.

Flat6pac,

You don't need to know anything about BMW numbering system. They installed in a 3.2 engine application perfectly, with no modification whatsoever. Leads are long enough, w/out question. They're a PERFECT fit.

Sensors are indeed the same for a 911 3.2, all 84-89.

Ingo is the man when it comes to ECU electronics. He's exactly right that the Bosch Motronic used in many 80's BMW's and the 84-89 911s are very similar systems and that's what allows for the parts interchange. The reason for the parts price differential, BMW vs Porsche, is something I can't explain...............

Thanks!

Wow! This was my first post after only a couple of days after finding this forum. I have been buying from Pelican for several years but somehow did not notice this site. I also did not expect to get back so many responses so quick. Thanks guys for the input. I have a whole list of questions I may be posting in the future. Great site!

Knowledge base here is shocking. You can find an answer to pretty much anything. Ask away and you'll get an answer. Sometimes more info. than you may want, and some debates, but good info. nonetheless!

What are some of the typical issues you would see if the speed sens fails?

Curious as I have replaced the ref sens, but not the speed sens yet.

The engine either won't run at all or cut out at some RPM depending on how bad the failure is.
