Why not a 930?

I have a 210 hp sc.my fiend has a built 930 with about 425 hp. When he put the pedal to the metal, I thought the front end was going to come off the ground!
I know there is a difference in $, but. I wonder if there are other good reasons to stick with aspirated cars.

Ronnie's.930 04-17-2010 08:23 PM

No !!!!!!!!!

Ofishbein 04-17-2010 08:38 PM

OK - my reasons for going with a 3.2 vs a 930:

1. Turbos create a lot of heat, which cause engine parts to wear more quickly. 70K-80K miles on a turbo is pretty high, where on a normally aspirated 911, it's just getting broken in.
2. The cost to service 930s is more, according to all the mechanics I spoke to when I was shopping. Probably not prohibitively expensive, but still a consideration. I was quoted $15K for a quality rebuild vs. $10K for a normally aspirated car.
3. It's getting harder and harder to find 245/45/16 tires for the rear from mainstream manufacturers.
4. Turbo lag means that a regular 3.2 Carrera is nearly as quick 0-60.

At the end of the day, the only thing the 930 really had going for it was its drop-dead gorgeous looks - and good 3.2s are about $10K cheaper. Having said that, I still might consider one if the right deal comes along . . .

Yes, exactly, why not a 930?
I like my Carrera and I'm making it better all the time, but I can't think of one single reason why I wouldn't wave bye-bye to it in a moment for a 930...

Top 10 reasons not to buy a 930"
- Speed scares you
- You enjoy spending $5000 to gain 7hp
- Short gears make a car feal fast
- You enjoy the wail of a flat 6 more than turbo whine and flames
- Big butts are overrated
- Dropping the engine for a valve adjustment is just too much fun
- I enjoy the experience of permanent turbo lag
- Hitting 40mph in an auto-x is so much more fun than 175mph on a road coarse.
- I will never have to decide which turbo is best

and the number 1 reason to never own a 930 ...

This thing is such a moneypit, I want to retire some day or send my kids to college.

Just buy both. The 911 is more of a cruiser than the 930.

I'm looking for the right deal so I can have 2, that one will be for the wifey but she can't drive a standard, Hey It's the thought that counts!

Perhaps this spelling error is a sort of freudian slip:D

From Merriam Webster:

Main Entry: fiend
Pronunciation: \ˈfēnd\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English fīend; akin to Old High German fīant enemy, Sanskrit pīyati he reviles, blames
Date: before 12th century
1 a : devil 1 b : demon c : a person of great wickedness or maliciousness
2 : a person extremely devoted to a pursuit or study : fanatic <a golf fiend>
3 : addict 1 <a dope fiend>
4 : wizard 3 <a fiend at mathematics>

Why not 930? I asked myself this very same question as I was considering my first Porsche purchase. I'm glad I chose forced induction.

Have you driven a turbo? The beauty is more than skin deep.

I have had both, 930 and a SC. At the end of the day, on the street, a slow car is more fun to drive fast, then, a fast car is to drive slow. By the way, I loved them both.

9dreizig 04-18-2010 05:28 AM

Chicks dig a guy with a big turbo!!

WIL84911 04-18-2010 05:59 AM

Really up to you. If you like & enjoy turbo looks & performance and you can afford to maintain one then it's a YES.

That is the absolute truth......."a slow car is more fun to drive fast, then, a fast car is to drive slow."

+1 I kind of like having a hibrid a NA cars comp ratio and the turbo

lucittm 04-18-2010 06:10 AM

Not quite John,
The absolute truth is "At the end of the day, on the street, a fast car is more fun to drive fast than anything else."

Are you sure? All I could attract were men in there 50's and little kids.

9dreizig 04-18-2010 02:55 PM

I don't know Kieth,, you can hang with me for a while. I can always use a wingman...

PorscheGAL 04-18-2010 03:10 PM

Buy both. We use the 911 for short trips to the store and the 930 for longer hauls to the Myrtle Beach. The cost of the 930 is high, but so fun to add parts.

I have always liked the look of the SC/carrera fendered cars better. I have been inti the turbo rotary cars for years. There's nothing like hearing that turbo spool, and feel the boost suddenly kick in. I am looking for a deal in a 930 motor to put into my SC to get the best of both worlds

clexton1 04-18-2010 05:40 PM

Get the 930.

I've been daily driving mine for 2 years and put 20k miles on it during that time. Of all the repairs I have had to do, none of them have been specific to the turbo.
