necessary to lube oil cooler seals?
The reason I ask is that I installed the cooler a couple of days ago with the seals dry and then read in Wayne's book that they should be coated with oil. It was a PITA to get the cooler on with that fiberglass air router on top of the case and I want to avoid taking it off again if it is unnecessary. Are they going leak if I don't do this? It is hard for me to imagine that it makes any difference.

Lubing them only aids in installing them in terms of allowing them to slip into place better & avoid being pinched or misaligned when the oil cooler is secured. If you feel they were properly seated when you secured the oil cooler, then you're fine. Bottom line is they won't leak if you installed them properly.
Long term, I like to lube the seals with a silicone great to deter breakdown of the seals by oil hardening of the rubber. But this takes like 10's of years to happen, so again not critically important.
